D2D2T and performance

I've got DPM 2012 and we're backing up a variety of servers.  I have my PGs set up with both short and long term storage.  Backup to tape is very slow.

I did some checking (using netstat) and I notice that the tape backup is going back to the server.  So for example, I have a 2TB file server.  Short-term storage to disk backs up the deltas and runs quick.  Then doing the weekly full takes over a day.  I checked and the tape backup is reading 100% of the 2TB from the original client (file server) - not from the DPM server.

Do I need to set up a 2nd DPM server and back up the primary to the secondary to tape?

Same for exchange - 4TB of exchange data, can't I just stream a backup set off from the dpm disk pool?

I've searched online and its unclear how tape backups are supposed to function.

Hi,

DPM does not read from the protected server when performing disk to disk to tape backups.  DPMRA will mount the last disk based backup from a local shadow copy on the DPM server and then copy that data to tape. If you look in resource monitor and look at disk IO, you will see DPMRA process reading from the shadow copy.

For tape backup performance issues, look at the disk IO read response time in milliseconds while reading from the shadow copy.
