Custom screen saver not saving
I'm still experimenting with this, but I'm having trouble getting any changes to the screen saver to stick. My default user template is set to have a 60 minute timer on a Starfield screen saver. Which screen saver it is set to is not necessarily important, only that it won't stay on one that I choose. Upon creating a new profile and using SteadyState to put on restrictions, it changes to a 10 minute XP logo screen saver. I remove restrictions and change it to 60 minutes (or turn it off) and reapply the restrictions. I save changes and reboot, and it reverts to the 10 minute XP logo. Is there a restriction I should have off, or is this a bug?

Just a suggestion but have you tried temporarily granting the user profile aministrative rights and making the changes?

Yes, this is designed behavior. When administrator configures restrictions for a user, the following screen saver related registry values are set if you do not choose the Log off when ___ minutes idle option. These registry values are set no matter whether you modify the option Log off when ___ minutes idle. HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScrnSave.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\logon.scr HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaveTimeout 600 HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaverIsSecure 0 HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaveActive 1 I understand that you would like to keep the custom screen saver configuration. We will forward this suggestion to the product group. Thank you for your feedback.

We ran into the same situation as we wanted company logo pics and such as the screensaver. We were trying to use My Pictures Slideshow screensaver otherwise known as ssmypics.scr. Here is how we fixed this problem. Logon.scr is a system protected file, if you delete it, it will come back via Windows File Protection. Ok let's fool Windows now. Go to the \Windows\system32\DDLCACHE folder and delete logon.scr and then rename the screensaver you want to use as logon.scr in that same folder (we made a copy and renamed it). Go to Windows\System32 and delete logon.scr, it will be put back as WFP goes to work but will bring back the Windows Logon Screensaver as the one you want instead as it thinks it brought back logon.scr as the file. Now when when the screensaver runs, it thinks its logon.scr but in reality, it's your screensaver that you wanted. Hope that helps, Rick RDFTS

Sammy, did the Product Group ever get a chance to review this issue? I should think they could circumvent this with an option in the GUI. We are using SS on public Kiosks using Plasma displays, and I need to keep the burn in to a minimum. Thanks! WMP DG for Disc Golf

DG_Ace, I am not sure whether your issue is the same. However, based on our product team's feedback, the design related to the screensaver will be modified in the new version. Regards,

Shawn, Thanks for the quick reply. I will look forward to seeing the new version when it comes out. Any idea of a time frame for this? WmP

As our engineers are still busy working on it, the time frame hasn't been fixed. However, they said it will be earlier next year. Thank you for your understanding and patience. Regards

Please check power settings for restricted steady state users too. We need to deactivate screensaver an adjust power settings to 4 hour monitor standby for a restricted steady state user.

Are there any other settings in Steadystate that were or were not set? I have been unsuccessful with you trick. Thank you, Allan

Thanks for the info. I tried the trick that Rick suggested, but had issues there too. So in conjuction with his trick ( renaming the logon.scr ) I also deleted all other scr's in the system32, and this seems to work for me.

I am working with this issue too.A client who owns a restaurant has an "internet surfing pc"and wants to display specials, bands that are playing, etc on the screen saver when its not in use. They want to update this every week. The current pc is locked down hard with policies and it takes 20 minutes just to revert things to the point where it can be changed.SoI thought SS would be an option. Not only do I want to change the screensaver to windows picture slideshow, but I want it to default to a different directory so they can login as admin, dump and the pics into a folder on the desktop, or maybe a usb drive for simplicity.I will post whether I am successful or not, but I am worried I can't change the default directory it looks in.

Ok, Following directions found here: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-450889.php "Or, you can automate the task using Tweak UI PowerToy. 1. Configure the Screensaver / Wallpaper settings in your profile 2. Set the Screensaver timeout to preferred value in minutes 3. Test if the wallpaper / screensaver works fine in your profile 4. Install Tweak UI and run it. Click Logon, click Settings 5. Select Screensaver from the list box and choose Copy Now 6. Select Wallpaper from the list box and choose Copy Now 7. Restart Windows for the changes to take effect" I was able to get the screen saver settings for the ssmypics.scr (My Pictures Screensaver) [which I renamed to logon.scr as noted above] to point to E:\screensaver. So now I can just have them replace the pictures on a usb drive whenever they need to change them and pop them into the computer. The timing is off however, it won't go to screensaver after a minute like I set it to, but I can experiment with it and probably get it working.

Hi I have the opposite problem. I have setup a 'locked down' user with hard disk protection on. My screen save does not work at all. it works if I 'unlock' the user but not when locked. I also modified the hive inside ntuser.man to set the screen saver to 30 seconds - but this also failed. Any help would be appreciated to get screen savers working.

I take it this only works for windows default screensavers? I have tried replacing the logon.scr with our custom saver and it never kicks in. The egg timer appears briefly, but no screensaver.
