Custom file type not opening from SharePoint
Thanks in advance for any assistance. I have a custom file type (.mpl) and I'd like users to be able to open these files with our application from SharePoint. However on Windows XP, IE 6 with the application installed I get the following error when I selected the "Edit in" menu: 'Edit Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater. I have registered the file type with our application install (according to logo requirements) including the "Content Type=application/mpl" entry Added the appropriate node to the Docicon.xml <Mapping Key="mpl" Value="icmpl.gif" EditText="My Application" OpenControl="SharePoint.OpenDocuments"/> There must be something else required to make a SharePoint Services-compatible application. Thanks, Al

Have you tried adding your file extension under central adminI think here , you can modify the excluded extension list under Central Administration > Operations > Blocked File Types !!!Or try this article... very nice one and it will help you http://livingtext.wordpress.com/2007/09/14/using-non-microsoft-file-types-in-sharepoint/

Hi Al, The OpenDocuments control requires Office 2003 or the 2007 Office system, please make sure the Office application installed on your Windows XP and mpl file is associate with the correct application in your client side. See Inside SharePoint: Integrating Office Applications (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2008.07.insidesharepoint.aspx). Another possibility is the application used for opening mpl file is not compatible Office client application. (you may need to contact software vendor about that), if so, the file type cannot be integrated with SharePoint. Hope the information can be helpful. Thanks for the suggestions, however they do not relate to my issue. Office documents open and work find. My file, .mpl, is not an office document. After further research ie appears the SharePoint.OpenDocuments control will only work with Office documents, so if I place a pdf file in a library and add the similar line to the docicon.xml file and install a reader on the client, the 'Edit in' menu will not work. However, Adobe has a fix for this that will make the 'Edit in' menu open the document in Adobe's application. My question is: What do I need to do so that my files (.mpl) will open in my application? How do I make my application 'Compatiable with SharePoint'.Thanks,Al

Thanks,The file extension is not blocked. I can upload a file and download if a user just clicks on the file link. Problem is with the 'Edit in' java menu.Al

You'll need to code a custom OpenDocument control. Check this Using custom OpenDocuments control to open custom file types in SharePoint http://blogs.msdn.com/b/malag/archive/2010/05/13/using-custom-opendocuments-control-to-open-custom-file-types-in-sharepoint.aspx I'm still struggling to make it work in SP 2010. For me it worked only in MOSS (2007). Half Abude Scheidl
