I am trying to create a calculated column for a list and discovered SharePoint will not allow using a People and Groups column type in a calculated column.

Is there a workaround for this?  I have a calendar that I need to create a custom field for that combines a text field and a name.

Hi tmm- copy the column into a plain text column, then use that for your calculated column.

is there a way to create a workflow to do that automagically?

Yes if you can use SharePoint Designer. You'd create a text column, then create a SP Designer workflow to copy People Picker value to the new column.
