Custom Monitor never applies to servers
I created a simple service monitor to watch the Spooler service up/down. Browsed to the relevant computers, selected the service, etc. Monitor was enabled from the start. I built the monitor in a custom unsealed MP as I have done previously, but none of my servers have picked it up 24 hours later. The monitor shows up under Windows Service, Windows Service, Windows Service (svchost) next to the Service Running State monitor under Availability and has no overrides applied, and is Enabled. Any suggestions as to why it isn't getting pulled onto the agents would be appreciated.

Hi I suspect that Layne is correct in that you have targetted incorrectly. I've done a walk through here using the authoring template: http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/2009/11/13/241/ You can't target groups for monitors and rules. You can only target groups for overrides. Cheers GrahamView OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Hi. What target did you use when creating the monitor? Did you use the service template, or basic service unit monitor?Layne, 2011 Microsoft Community Contributor Recipient

My last attempt was a normal monitor (not using the template) targeted at Windows Computers with no overrides, this was to see if I could get the monitor to apply anywhere. Originally I had used the template, but I can't recall the exact mix of overrides etc. that was in use. I've created a new one using the excellent document Graham, but I have a question: your screenshot shows an Authoring Template item in Monitors and in Discovery, in the authoring pane after you've finished the creation. I see no such category in my console. I only see the monitor I created under the Templates- Windows Service, and I see the discovery under Discovered Type: Printer Spooler Service Monitor. Should I see items labeled Authoring Template as well? Also, nothing has shown up on servers in the group yet, but it has only been ten minutes. Thanks!!

Hi If you look under Authoring Templates, Windows Services and make a note of the name you have given the "template". The go to Authoring, Management Pack objects, montiors and scope this on the name from the above step you should see availability and performance monitors. In my document I named the template Authoring Template - <Something> and hence the monitors are labelled authoring template. But if you have just named the template "Print Spooler" then that is what you should scope for under monitors. If you take a look at the operationsmanager event log on a server in the group for eventid 1201 (new configuration downloaded) and then 1210 (new config loaded). You should also be able to see in the Management Pack in the Agent Health State\Management Packs folder. It shouldn't take too long (I would have expected them to show up within 10 minutes). Let us know if they are still not there (under Monitoring, Windows service and process monitoring, windows services). Sadly I won't be at MMS this year - I was in Seattle a couple of weeks ago and as I'm based in the UK, 2 trips to the US in one month was a bit too much. Enjoy the beer ;-) View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/
