To use the document content types you need to create a custom document library, not just a custom list. Document Libraries are lists that have been extended in specific ways. You won't be able to use the document content types unless your custom list has been extended in the same ways. If you are doing this in the user interface you need to start by building off a document list, not a custom list. If you are doing it as a feature you need to make some specific changes to the Schema.xml and other files. Here's a blog by a fellow MVP that walks you thorugh the process. http://www.toddbaginski.com/blog/archive/2007/08/16/creating-a-custom-document-library-feature-in-wss-v3.aspxPaul Stork SharePoint Server MVP

Hi, You can use the "Attachments" option of list to have documents in a list and can use metadata of list to store informations related to document. You can also create a web part to give users feel of library to some extent: a) Provide browse and upload buttons along with columns to enter information. b) On click of upload button store information in metadata and document as attachment. c) In the list create a hyperlink column and on click of upload button, provide path of attachment in the "URL" field and name of document in "Description" field. d) Show this hyperlink column in view so that when user can click on this column to view the documents. e)Also hide the default attachment option so that user wont be able to attach multiple documents. With this approach you wont get functionality like check in check out but atleast you can upload (attach) documents in a list. Hope this helps. Regards.
