Creating web application with custom URL
Hello all, I am new to SharePoint. I want to know one thing that i created one web application as http://myserver:253/ here "myserver" is my computer name and 253 is my port number. And while creating this i didn't entered Header. Is it possible to make my URL as http://myserver.com ? If its possible what i have to do? Thanks

Hello Trinath, If its a new web app, why not create another with name "myserver.com" If you dont want the port number, you can let it to the default. (by default it will take 80) Alternatively you can also use Alternate access mapping :) Details can be found at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sharepoint/archive/2007/03/06/what-every-sharepoint-administrator-needs-to-know-about-alternate-access-mappings-part-1.aspx and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263208(office.12).aspx Hope this helps, Regards, Rohan

Hello Trinath, You mentioned that you changed the port to 20 Port 0 to 1023 are reserved ports :( and can not be used by any pplications So I would suggest to change the port value to something between 1024 to 65535 Hope this helps, Regards, Rohan

Hi Trinath, You need to add the DNS entry for the Hostname (intranet.mycompany.com) and the IP (Server IP). Once this hostname entry is made in the DNS, then you need to change the port number of the web application to 80 and then add this URL in the Alternate Access Mapping.
