Hi
Some additional info - A poster called Rule and Monitor Targeting Best Practices is available in pdf format at:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=125048
If you only want to run the rules against a subset of the targetted class then:
1) Create it disabled, targetted at the most appropriate class
2) Create a group of the objects \ servers you want to monitor
3) Create an override (enable = true) for the rule against the group. You can target overrides at groups. You just can't target rules or monitors at groups.
Best Practice:

Hi,
Regarding creating a monitor or alert generating rule based on Event Log, please refer to the following documents:
How to Create a Simple Windows Event Unit Monitor in Operations Manager 2007
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309597.aspx
How to Create an Alert Generating NT-Event-Log-Based Rule in Operations Manager 2007
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309568.aspx
I think the article Graham mentioned should be this one:
Best practices to use when you configure overrides in System Center Operations Manager 2007
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943239
In addition, regarding targeting a computer group, please try the methods in the following Knowledge Base article:
You cannot configure a rule or a monitor to target a computer group in the Operations console in System Center Operations Manager 2007
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938999
Hope this helps.
Thanks.
