Creating New Folders using Windows Explorer is very slow
Hi,
We have a SharePoint 2013 environment upgraded from SharePoint 2010. When working with Windows Explorer, users are able to navigate the folders normally without any issues. However, if a user tries to create a new folder from inside Windows Explorer, the
process takes up to 30 seconds to complete and most of the time through the process the window shows "Not Responding". However, after that the folder is created normally. We did not face this issue in the previous SharePoint 2010 environment.
I have tried the various suggested solutions online like disabling "Automatically detect settings" in IE but that did not fix the issue.
Our environment is SharePoint 2013 with Windows Server 2012 R2. Our users are using IE9.
Any idea what might be causing the problem?
Thank you.

Hi,
Please test the issue on more client PC and see if it is a client performance issue.
If you create new Folder via Windows Explorer on a SharePoint server, does the issue still occur?
Is there load balance deployed in your envrionment?
Does the issue occur if you map a network drive to a SharePoint library per the steps in the article below, then create a new folder:

Thank you for the reply. The issue can be reproduced on different machines. I tried creating a new folder directly on the server and had the same issue. I also tried accessing one of the servers directly (not through NLB URL) and had the same issue also.
Mapping to a network drive is also showing the same slow behavior.
I also tried changing the browser settings (removing the "Automatically detect settings" option) but no luck.
Thanks.

I have already tried this option without any change in the behavior. Thanks.

Do you have RBS (Remote Blob Storage) configured on the content database? Is there ever a time when it works perfectly or is it slow 100% of the time? Is there an issue when transferring files using Windows Explorer or is the problem only with
creating folders?

We're not using RBS. It is slow all the time only when creating folders. All other activities are normal.
Thanks.

If you create a folder normally through a web browser is that quick enough?
My next step would be to watch the ULS logs while creating a folder using Windows Explorer. You can download the ULS Log Viewer here if you don't have it:

Have you made any progress with this?
January 23rd, 2015 12:04pm
I apologize for the late reply. Using the web browser, the performance is fast enough.
In the logs, I did not find any exceptions while creating folders. There were two requests logged, one starting with MKCOL:http://URL/New%20folder and the second PROPPATCH:http://URL/New%20folder
Thanks

Hi Moezz,
Please check if we have IEs automatic proxy settings, if yes, please uncheck the Automatically detect settings box in Internet Option - Connections tab - Lan settiongs.

Hi Dats,
We tried that already and it did not solve the issue.
Thanks.

Hi Moezz,
Thank you for your response. As the issue persists on both Client and Server, please try to use IE 11.
And you metioned this performane issue on the first time to create folders, may i know if we can reproduce this issue after we close windows explorer folder.
Best Regards,
Dats Luo

Hi Dats,
We observed the same behavior with IE 11. The issue can be reproduced after we close windows explorer folder.
However, I have tried creating a new web application in the farm. Creating a folder using windows application in this new empty web application works normally. It is faster than the other one.
Thanks again for the help.
