Couldn't access Sharepoint site with intranet URL
Hi All, I have set up an friendly name to a Sharepoint site. So i went to Operations --> Alternate Access Mappings and given a friendly URL as http://testsite:111 in Intranet zone with http://servername:111 (Default URL). After this i have added the same friendly name in IIS Bindings section for that particular web application. IP Address: All Unassigned; Port: 111; Host name: testsite -- in IIS Bindings section. Application pool Identity of this particular web application is Sharepoint Admin. But i am still not able to access the site with http://testsite:111 but i am able to access the site using default http://servername:111 URL. Can anyone of you please tell me why i am not able to access the site with AAM URL? Thanks, Shailu.Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person we become.

Have you tried from the server or from a client PC? (maybe you just need to disable loopback check - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861) Can you ping the SharePoint WFE with the friendly name? What is the HTTP¨error code (is it 404 not found or 401 ... authentication stuff)? PS: when using multiple zone URLs you should have multiple zones, and not play with the bindings in IIS (IE extend the web application - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262668(office.12).aspx)Florin DUCA MCITP Enterprise Admin, MCSE 2003 +Sec, MCITP/MCPD SP 2010, MCTS conf/dev WSS3/MOSS, MCPD ASP.Net 3.5, MCTS ISA 2006 Logica Business Consulting, France

Just make sure, that you have the DNS address exist for testsite. Quick Check: In client PC, Ping testsite and also servername, make sure they both goto the same address. If not, add the host entry in client pc (quick solution). Cheers, ~Uday, http://www.mstechblogs.com/sharepoint

As Uday mentioned please check if you are able to ping your friendly name "testsite" from your client PC or on the same box where your WFE running. If you are using DNS, please check if you have a DNS entry for "testsite", if you are not using DNS you can edit your host file from /drivers/etc/host in your server and client PC to point the request to the WFE Like add below entry in your host file IP address of your server "your friendly name"Thanks, Arun, Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Thanks for your replies. I am trying to browse http://testsite:111 from the WFE, but i am getting "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". When i tried to ping the testsite from WFE, it is saying that "Ping request could not find host testsite. Please check the name and try again." We have another web sites on the same WFE and i am able to access those sites with friendly name and i am able to ping those names too. Can you please tell me what am i missing here for this testsite.Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person we become.

Shailu123, you are missing DNS record for that name (testsite). Edit the "hosts" file located in windows/system32/drivers/etc/ and add this line: 127.0.0.1 testsite Or if you need to publish it globally, add an A record to your DNS. Best regards

Hi , As you change the servername to testsite in the url ,you have to add ’ 127.0.0.1 testsite’ to copy of ‘hosts’ located in C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc .
