Could not open Office document from SharePoint document library
I could not open a office document from a document library. I getcould not open "filename.doc" error message box. Document menu > Send To > Download a CopyHowever I can save the document to my local drive and able to open it.It seems that when I try to open the file, it is not written to the temporary internet folder. The same issue exist when I try to open the file as a link from outlook.Document menu > Send To > E-mail a link Any thoughts?

Which version of SharePoint are you using, and what version of Office? What if you try opening the document by clicking the document's link, or choosing the Edit in Microsoft Office Word from the item's menu?SharePoint Developer | Administrator | Evangelist -- Twitter - https://twitter.com/next_connect

Hi, I understand you that you download a copy of the file using Send To - > Download Copy option, and then try to open the file, but cannot open it. Could you please tell me the detailed error message you got? Let me know if I misunderstand you. Xue-Mei Chang

Hi,You got it correct.I get a message box with the following error---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Could not open 'http://sitename.com/sites/doclibname/filename.xls'.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------After I click OK, below message appears in message box:------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Internet Explorer cannot downloadfilename.xlsfrom sitename.comInternet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try later------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thesame error message appears when I try to open a link from Outlook 2003(Send To > E-mail a link). After some research, I found that both these method will copy the file to local temporary folder to open. Also I'm have issues only with Office documents and can open other document type.Tried repair Office, but still have same issue.Everything works fine for some users. However, could not resolve this issue in my PC.Please share your thoughts. Thanks in advance.Prasath C

I found this problem with Sharepoint 2007 and Office 2010; Solution is de-select "Automatically Detect Settings" under LAN setting part in Internet Explorer. Let's try!

I am having a similar issue: IE8, Office 2010, Sharepoint 2010 *or* Sharepoint 2007 (either library, same problem). I upload PowerPoint or Excel files to Sharepoint (created by me) and then I cannot open them in the client from the Sharepoint library from *that* machine. If I try to open them using a different computer, it works. Visio 2010 files work fine. I have tried resetting defaults, and also unchecking the LAN setting - neither helps. Suggestions?

Did you uncheck "automatically detect settings" under LAN settings, restart IE, re-check "automatically detect settings" and restart IE again?

I am also experiencing the same issue with IE8, Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 or SharePoint 2007. Word 2010 or Excel 2010 will not open their respective files. I get a dialog from Word like: Could not open http://dev-sps2010/Testing/Code Review.docx However I can open the docx file from SharePoint with WordPad or another editor. I can also open the file if I use another workstation that's running Office 2007. So it appears to be something peculiar about Office 2010. I've tried everything in the above posts, and then some.

The solution which works for me I found on this blog: http://howtosharepoint.blogspot.com/2010/04/word-experienced-error-trying-to-open.html "Below are the steps.. Run one of the Office 2010 application (e.g. Word 2010). Click on File menu, and select Options. In the “Options” dialog, select Trust Center in the left pane. Click on Trust Center Settings in the right pane. Select Protected View in the left pane of “Trust Center” dialog. Disable any of all of the protected view options as below by unticking the check boxes: Enable Protected View for files that fail validation Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe locations Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments"
