System Account (SHAREPOINT\system) has added you to the ' portal Members' group for this SharePoint site. Group description: Use this group to give people contribute permissions to the SharePoint site: portal As a member of this SharePoint group, you can: * Participate in the SharePoint site at: http://machine-name:3 this site is not working giving me error "internet explorer cannot display" could you please help me Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Is this the exact address of your SharePoint site http://machine-name:3 if yes than you have assigned a wrong port number to you SharePoint site. TCP Port 3 is used for compression Process, and has caused an conflict with your web application. I would suggest to always use Port number above 1024 for any of your application site as Port 0-1024 are registered port with known application with IANA and you are more prone to have conflicts with applications if using ports in below 1024, as you are having now. Would suggest you to change your Web Application Port in IIS and make a entry of the same in Alternate Access Mapping. Also make sure the port number is above 1024. Or you can extend your application and assign a different port number. Check the following thread for the same http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointadmin/thread/f9e4a2d2-d962-4256-bb8d-9d091a3c83ac/#8cccb31e-5f6b-40bd-bfe2-1ccac8ef35da Hope that helps... -Mukesh

You should ask different questions as separate threads - usually when a thread is replied other experts don't read it anymore. Also hard to tag an answer properly. Regarding SharePoint accounts, see best practices guidances here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc850692.aspx In particular, #7 regarding accounts http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc678863.aspx I tend to think the best practice guidance from Technet is a bit over the top with well over 10 accounts, but I wouldn't go with less than 3: A SharePoint setup admin account (for running installations, upgrade license keys, adding additional farms). domain account with server admin permissions. A SharePoint database account (for all SharePoint db operations). domain account with SQL server dbcreator and securityadmin A SharePoint service account (for SharePoint timer, search indexer). domain account (optional) A search content crawler account... if for some reason your service account (#3) doesn't have permission to read 'secret' content jliu - johnliu.net - www.ssw.com.au

Using multiple accounts or not for a SharePoint, in my opinion it all depends on alot of things. I'll tell you my personal experience with different clients and there company policies where i have deployed and configured SharePoint farms. 1. One of our clients IT team where so stubborn that, they where like we can only provide you one AD account and no more than that, as they thought it was a security threat and even after telling them all the benefits they gave me one account and as you that SharePoint farm is running great for 2 years or so. But there's a security threat if this single account is comprised the entire SharePoint farm is compromised if this account gets locked or password is changed all SharePoint services and sites will go down. 2. By password change another client happy to give all the accounts i want, after deployment and configuration as per Microsoft Best Practice guidelines, I get a call right after 3 weeks that the entire SharePoint farm is down and the reason being there AD Policy which requires all users to change there password every 21 Days. SO to avoid such downtimes in the future, as a solution i proposed them to remove the policy from all SharePoint account and they where not happy with that. And as per company policy that never happened. I would suggest you plan such thing before deployment and at least use 3-4 at minimum service accounts. -Mukesh

Good you created the site on a non standard port, now we can troubleshoot your problem better. Are you able to open the site on any machine in your Network, also are you able to ping the server properly from the machine where you are getting the Page cannot display message. And by Ping i mean if Portal is the name of the server are you able to ping it or if you have assigned a host header name for the SharePoint site have you configured your DNS server with a Host entry of the Host name with corresponding server IP. Please revert with the details on the above. -Mukesh
