On a new corporate Intranet based on SP 2010 enterprise - planned so far: one web-app with one site collection (for starters) but which site template are commonly used as the top-level site ? - and why ? I like to make the top site a publishing site. Then under it can be whatever. This is because the top level site will seldom be collaborative. It will be more informative, and the publishing works better for that, IMHO. That being said, this is based on my 2007 experience, but you've asked about a 2010.
