Core CAL and Enterprise CAL
Hi.  My customer has Enterprise licenses for MS Windows and Office.  Does this entitle them to an Enterprise CAL for System Center?  If not, does anyone know of what products do automatically qualify you for a Enterprise System CALS?  Also, if my customer does not have licenses and does need to "upgrade" their licenses, is there a rough order of magnitude as to the cost of this per x 2 user for example?  Thanks so much in advance.

hello,

your question is not really clear about Enterprise CALs!!??

if you mean that your customer has Enterprise CAL Suite than, all System Center Clients licenses are included: System Center configuration manger Client license + System Center endpoint protection + System Center Client Management Suite.

on the core cal Suite there are not the Client mangement Suite.

thanks

Thanks for your reply.  My understanding on licenses is not great, so apologies for the lack of clarity.  As far as I know they have licenses for MS Office and Windows.  They are an enterprise client.  I suppose my question is, will they based on this existing license, be able to use the System Center Enterprise or would this just give them the CORE?  Effectively they need all of the Core and Enterprise parts of SC fully licensed and I am working out costs for their transformation.  They believe that because they have licenses for Office and Windows they get Core or Enterprise SC for no extra charge?  I suppose I am after understanding is this correct...  :-s

THanks

Hi,

I confirm that for customers with Windows enterprise Clients and Office licenses (all Editions) there are ANY System Center components included.

customers Needs System Center products for mangement, Monitoring, ... the Needs to purchase separately System Center products in Volume licensing contracts. however, if customers have already for example the Enterprise CAL Suite than, all System Center compenents for Clients are included(as mentioned on my first answer). the Core CAL Suite includes only configuration manger and endpoint protection.

I hope my answer about licensing is clear. for more questions about licensing do not hesitate to ask me.

thanks

Thank you Diramoh,

To confirm.  My Client should be OK to use all of the System Center products?  I am not sure what you mean by "Needs to purchase separately System Center products in Volume licensing contracts"

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,

just for confirmation that my answer be clear,

it is not clear what do you mean with Windows enterprise Clients!? if you mean that your customer has Windows 7 or 8 ENTERPRISE Edition than, the System Center products are NOT included. it means if he wants to have System Center Clients products he needs to purchse it separately.

if you mean that your customer has Enterprise CAL Suite than, all System Center Clients compenents are included.

Enterprise CAL Suite ioncludes: Windows Server CAL + Exchange Server std and Enterprise CAL + SharePoint std  and eterp CAL + Lync std and entzerp CAL + Sys Cent configuration Manager + Sys Cent Endpoint Protection + Sys Cent Client Management Suite.

the Windows Enterprise Client is an operating System Client without any System Center products.

the Enterprise CAL Suite is a differnet product for customers needs CALs for Microsoft Servers pool that included System Center Clients products.

I hope now it's clear. If not, do not hesitate to ask me

thanks

Thanks Diramoh,

It is making more sense now.  One further clarification: MS Office, if they have a license for this, does this mean they have a CAL at all?  Or is this totally separate and they still need to buy a Enterprise CAL?

Do you know roughly how much a Enterprise CAL is per user/customer?

Thanks

Mike

You can find out more about licensing from:

http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/SystemCenter2012-R2.aspx#tab=2

You can also get more information from the System Center 2012 R2 Licensing Guide and your Microsoft account contact or licensing contact can also provide answers that are specific to your situation.

you're talking about desktop CALs

Standard CAL gets you:
Microsoft SharePoint Server Standard CAL (but not the enterprise features)
Microsoft Exchange Server Standard CAL (but not Universal messaging for voicemail)
Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager Client Management License (desktops only)
System Center Endpoint Protection (antivirus client and subscription service)
Microsoft Lync Server Standard CAL (not voice)

The enterprise CAL gets you:
All of the components of the Core CAL Suite (listed above)
Exchange Server Enterprise CAL with Services
.. Exchange Online with Archiving for Exchange Server (* MS has bundled in Office365 services here resulting in a big price bump compared to last renwal)
SharePoint Server Enterprise CAL
Lync Server Enterprise CAL (voice)
Windows Server Active Directory Rights Management Services CAL
System Center Client Management Suite
..System Center Operations Manager Client Management License (monitor desktops)
..System Center Service Manager Client Management License (ITIL ticket management system)
..System Center Data Protection Manager Client Management License (server backups)
..System Center Orchestrator (formerly Opalis) Client Management (automate new user setup etc)http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/briefs/cal-suites.aspx

Tip: If you don't use many of the Enterprise CAL features it's cheaper to buy standard cal and then add separate ent cals for just the features you actually use (e.g. just the eCAL for Exchange to get voicemail)

It's end user / desktop focused.  Does not cover VMM. For that you'll need System Centre Managed Server licence for each of your ESX/VMware servers being managed.  look at "Enrolement for core infrastructure" where you can get Windows+Sys Center licence bundled together.  Consider MSDN per user subscriptions (there are several versions with/without visual studio) if you're only using it for development environments (eg test labs)

Hmm. According to sys center pages Looks like standard CAL includes VMM if your using it for virtual desktops only.  Recommend talk to a reseller and you can then scratch your heads together

And don't get me started on VDI (pay per thin client, not per Windows VM..)
