Copy entire list including contents to a different SharePoint site
Hi: Just using the GUI in WSS 3.0, is it possible to copy an entire list including content from one site to another - asssuming I have admin rights to both sites? If so, how does one go about it? Thanks in advance for your help. Dave

Typically, you could just save the list as a template (.STP file) and include the content (if under 10MB) and then import it into the other site. This can be done via "Settings > List Settings", look under "Permissions and management" and "Save this list as a template". Here is a walk-through. If this list includes content larger than 10MB, you can increase via STS command (example increases limit to 100MB): stsadm -o setproperty -propertyname max-template-document-size -propertyvalue 100000000 -Brian

Open Site Settings - > Select the list you want to "copy" -> click Settings then Document Library Settings (or list settings) -> Save document library as template and check the box to include all content. Save it to your desktop, then go to the new site and open Site Settings, Under Gallery's click List Templates -> Upload the template from your desktop, give it a name (be careful not to overwrite another list with the same name) and press ok, then go create a list based off the template you just uploaded with the content included... you're done. Thanks Brian and Kris. Actually, that's exactly what I was thinking about doing so glad we're all on the same page. A couple of questions: - my list is 31MB so I can't save it as a template. Brian: I presume the STS command isn't something I can just do from my PC as a normal user - but something I'd need the admin of our SharePoint IT area to do? - if I can't get the STS solution, I could remove the attachments that are causing the list to be as big as it is. I only have about 50 records with attachments but it would be a pain to remove them one by one and then reattach later.... Can one access the attachments via Windows Explorer - and, if so, how does one track down where the attacments are stored. Again, thanks for your help. Dave

Hi Dave, Yes, an admin would need to increase the export limit. Since we are working with a list, we won't be able to open the list via Windows Explorer either. So I would suggest working with the list in a datasheet view, where it is slightly easier via that interface to remove attachments quickly. When working with the list in datasheet mode, double-click the attachment field an a prompt should open to remove or add attachments. 50 records is fairly small and it will boring and repetitious, but I think this would be the best workaround for you. -Brian

Thanks Brian. I spoke to our admin folks and they won't increase the size as it affects all SharePoint sites. (I'm with a company that has 80,000 employees, so this isn't an option....) I managed to get the list below 10MB by finding a couple of monster sized attachments on a couple of records so was able to create a template including content. Thanks again for your help. Dave
