Copy a Site Collection
Hi,
I have a requirement of copying a SharePoint 2010 site collection from one web application to another web application. I tried by saving the site as template and uploading into another web application but that is coming as a subsite but not as a site collection.
Do I need to do backup and restore or is there any alternative to do this. Please advice.
Thanks,
smith

Hi Smith,
You can try using STSADM -0 backup and restore commands. For more information refer below link

You can copy a site collection by doing backup and restore.
You can do backup and restore using two methods
one with stsadm and other with SharePoint Disigner
with stsadm
back up: stsadm -o backup -filename <filename> -url <url>
restore: stsadm -o restore -filename <filename> -url <url>
With designer follow this link for step by step process

Hi Smith,
You got this thread created in the wrong spot (pre 2010 forum) - may be move that to the 2010 forum.
As this is for 2010 - if you have access to Central Admin you could 'perform a site collection backup' through the UI (CA > Backup and Restore section).
and ofcourse STSADM or PowerShell commands would also work - as other contributors mentioned.
Hope this helps! BlueSky2010
