Thanks for providing such great & technical information. Scanpst.exe definitely repair ost files but upto a certain level as it works only on minor errors occurred with ost files. at higher corruption status scanost.exe or scanpst.exe does not flags any error rather abandons to work. Where as other specialized ost conversion app recovers all components from Offline ost file. and saves into PST file.

where by creating new profile is a good option  via "Cached Exchange Mode". But it will old data on the stake of data loss. as now if a new profile is created then the information stored in old ost files will be orphaned. also not to forget the fact if connection to exchange server is not established then if won't be possible to create new ost profile. But if connection to exchange server is reestablished then convert ost to pst in offline mode. here the only condition is the profile creating the same ost file should not be modified. but if your mailbox is re-located in another Organization Unit then nothing can be done.

Here, if you still have access to Exchange server then directly take an online backup from edb file to pst file via ExMerge for Exchange 2003 or Powershell for Exchange 2007 and 2010. This is an extreme alternative if ost data cant be fetched from any way.

Yes, what TechRosen has suggested would be the first thing to try.

The .OST file is just a cached copy of what exists in the mailbox on the mailserver.

Unless you have reason to believe there is something in the .OST file that does not exist in the server "master" copy, you can either delete it or rename it something else (perhaps more prudent... just in case).

You could also take Office out of Exchange cached mode and connect directly to the server mailbox.

Does the problem go away?

If not, getting rid of the .OST file will not solve the problem.

In that link, they have you move the location of the .OST file. I'd just rename them and leave the default location as is.

Then you put Outlook back in cached mode

There will probably be some warning (don't recall exact wording) but you should opt to create a new .OST.

How to make a backup convert of a .ost file to .pst file

If you are using Outlook with Microsoft Exchange Server, Outlook saves its data in a .ost file.

Follow these steps to back up the whole .ost file:

• Select File, then Import and Export.
• Select Export to a file, then Next.
• Select Personal Folder File (.pst) from the drop down list, then Next.
• Select the folder(s) you want to backup.
• If you select the folder Mailbox - Your Name your whole mailbox will be copied.
• Select a name for the backup and select Finish.

It's been long I have seen so many post on one thread :)

If you deleted the Exchange account, you may be able to recover the account if your operating system supports system restore and you only recently deleted the account. If too much time has passed you are less likely to have a restore point available.

1. Open the system restore application. In Vista it is at Start Menu, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.
   Or enter %systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe in Start search field or Start menu, Run.
2. Pick a date just before the profile was deleted.

When Windows restarts the account will be back and you can move or export the contents of the OST to a PST. Then either delete the account or run restore again to return to the point made before the restore.
