Context menus on a document
I have a WSS 3.0 site with a document library that contains a text document and a word document. - On an XP machine with Office 2003 & IE6 the word doc's context menu contains "edit in Microsoft Word", but the text document contains no editing extension. - On a Windows 7 machine with Office 2007 or 2010 and IE8, the text document has an "edit document" menu item that opens it in notepad. - On an XP machine with Office 2007 and IE6, the "edit document" menu item is also there. Can anyone tell me if it's a specific dll that's different, or how I can make this work for all users? It doesn't seem to have anything to do with file associations on the client. Thanks.

It has to do with the version of the OWSSUPP.DLL file on the client machine. The DLL is installed by Office and the newer versions (2007+) adds the context menu edit for .txt files. If you upgrade that first XP machine to Office 2007, it should be able to edit the .txt files. I trust that answers your question... Thanks C http://www.cjvandyk.com/blog
