Constantly prompted for credentials after adding and accessing New Alternate Access Mapping
We have a SharePoint Server 2007 that was setup for users to access via a DNS entry, but it was not a fully qualified name. So users access the server via: http://Portal . This has worked and was flawlessy operational for over 3 years. We needed to move our server to a new IP subnet and we began granting access to users outside of our domain/DNS. The answer was to have thier local host files contain the ip address and name for resolution. This is a management nightmare so we had our ISP add a DNS forward lookup zone for our domain and now the fully qualified name will resolve to the correct ip address. We added an "Alternate Access Mapping" to our site using the FQN. The mapping was added to the "Internet" zone. Issue: Now when users access the site using the FQN they are prompted for credentials every few minutes. If they navigate through the site and click on a document to open it, they are prompted again. This happens even with users within the same domain and have thier IE settings configured with "Enable Windows Authentication" and adding the site to the "Trusted Sites" list. Any Help Is Greatly Appreciated.

Hi Veera Raj, If we use use the original (aka: default zone) name no prompt for credentials occurs. This only happens when using the FQDN that we entered into the Intranet zone. I did find a articel that described a fix, but carried with it some potential security issues. I would prefer to resolve this at the server as the whole point of using the FQDN was to keep from having to edit user's "hosts" file entry for this site. We do not use a proxy server. This problem occurs even from workstations in the same domain and using the same domain suffix. Thanks.JT

Try the following Add it as a trusted site in IE 6 or for IE 7 adding to Intranet Security Zone. Disable client integration for that particular zone. Remove the word "OPTIONS" from web.config file. The second option did work for me. Thanks VV

Did you ever figure out a solution? I am having the exact same issue. I removed the netbois mapping and changed the default mapping to the FQDN that our WSS site is hosted on and now everything I open, wmvs, html pages, Office documents, etc wants me to authenticate again.

I have a work around, but it is hardly a fix. For every user, you must go into thier IE settings (yes each user because these settings are profile specific - find a way to do this automatically through GPO or something) and add the FQDN to the "Trusted Sites" list. Then go into "Custom Level" and select the radio button for "automatic logon with current username and password" . This can be a serious security issue if you have outside URLs/ sites added to your "Trusted Sites" list and those sites ask for credentials.JT

Hello, The laptop or desktop should be on the same domain as the web application . After it is on the same domain try marking it as an intranet site in your browser. Let us know. Deepankar Mohapatra Deepankar Mohapatra http://dmohapatra.in

My implementation may be in contrast to how WSS was designed to work. I just want local logins to a WSS 3.0 site. We are hosting it remotely for people on a different domain, but it's really just a content repository and it cannot be integrated into their domain. I could access all the content fine before I fiddled with the AAM, but once I changed the mappping to the URL it's being hosted on I started getting login prompts every time I opened a document.
