Configuration Manager SP2 Upgrade Path and Licensing
I am trying to sort out the upgrade path from SCCM 2007 SP1 to SP2, what features to expect and what caveats may occur. Will the SCCM 2007 SP2 be a no-cost upgrade from which previously licensed versions? Will SP2 upgrade from both SP1 and R2 or will SP1 need to be upgraded to R2 first? For example, if upgrading directly from SP1 to SP2, will we forego the ability to use R2-only features?

Yes, SP2 is a free maintenance based service pack for the product as are all service packs for Microsoft products. SP2 is an upgrade to ConfigMgr and has no bearing or dependence on R2, R2 is a feature pack add-on to the functionality present in ConfigMgr. Thus, SP2 can be applied to a ConfigMgr system regardless of the presence of R2 and R2 should be able to be added after SP2 is installed if you do not already have it installed. When will SP2 be available?

It is currently available as a "Release Candidate" on Connect . The RC is not for production use in any form or fashion though. I think October is the target release time frame for the final version.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys
