Computer accounts with same name in different domains in same forest
I have SCCM SP1 configured and working on a single domain in our forest. Today I added system discovery for a seconde domain in the same forest. All of the computers in the newly added domain are now showing in our collections. I am seeing some issues with computers with identical computer names. Here is an example;Domain AACCOUNTING001Domain BACCOUNTING001Domain B is the newly added domain. After discovery ran for the new domain there was not a new computer account added for ACCOUNTING001. The computer account updated with the information of the new Domain. It also shows that it has a client installed even though I have not pushed clients to the new domain. Looks like it showing information from both domain computer accounts. Not sure where to proceed. I searched the groups and can't find a hit. Is there a way to discover and manage computers in multiple domains? And how do I account for duplicate computer names across domains. Thanks for the help

I have not worked in a situation where there are two real systems with the same name in two different domains but I think I can see how you would have a problem with this. The AD system discovery collects details from the AD such as Name, description, etc but, unlike heartbeat discovery, it will not contain the client GUID since it is not provided by the client. This means that when the DDM on the site server receives the DDR it will try to match it with one of the other records on the site to see if it is updating an existing system. In your case it sems that when the record is received for domain B it is matching the name with the existing resource and merging the two together - this will make it seem as if the client from domain A becomes the one from domain B. As I say, I have not experienced this myself butit could be worth trying to set the option 'Automatically create new client records for duplicate hardware IDs' in your site properties. Otherwise, if it is not possible to rename the systems with a same name, would it be possible to create a child site for one of your domains to dicover and install clients on the resources? Once the client is installed and it has a GUID then they will not be merged when the client data flows up. These are just ideas so I hope that it helps in some way or that you find some way around this! Chris

Thanks for your response Chris.Once Heartbeat discovery runs it changes it back to the original Domain A information. Then once System Discovery runs it changes is back.I do have the 'Automatically create new client records for duplicate hardware ID's' turned on and this doesn't seem to make a difference.I can't imagine we are the first SCCM implementation with 2 domains and duplicate computer names. I guess we could rename accounts in the other domain to be distinct but this seem counter to automating system management. I was just hoping I was missing something simple. Your child site idea seems like a logical solution but wanted to get some feedback from others that have come across this beforeThanks again for your response.

I think that I have read something about this issue somewhere (computernames have to be unique; otherwise you'll see the exact same issue you're describing) ... but I cannot find it right now and I am not sure if that's really true. *edit* Here you go.
