Compatibility of ConfigMan 2012 R2 SP1 and SQL 2014 SP1?

I know there is a hotfix for SQL Server 2014 SP1 for SCCM 2012 R2, but what happens when you have both SQL 2014 R2 SP1 and SCCM 2012 R2 SP1?  Is the hotfix still needed?  Does the hotfix need to be reapplied if you applied it on a SCCM 2012 R2 installation and later upgraded it to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1?

Can SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 be installed with SQL 2014 SP1 as a new installation without making it a 2 step upgrade process of installing the older versions and then upgrading?

SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 supports SQL 2014 SP1 out-of-the-box as stated here:
