I have a question regarding the limitations (business not technical) of using SharePoint as the foundation to a commercially available product. Does anyone know commercially availalbe products that use SharePoint as the foundation? In other words, products that are built on SharePoint not for SharePoint? I assume this is feasible as long as appropriate licensing fees are paid to Microsoft, but not sure. Thanks in advance.

That's too open ended a question. The difference between WSS, MOSS and MOSS Enterprise will be what features are available between them, not so much the licensing (although there are consdierations between Intra/Inter/Extraners). Microsoft products and major third party additions will always stipulate what versions of the product you need in order to maximise the commercial product within the contained literature. Take PerformancePoint for instance, it's only available on MOSS Enterprise.
