Client Installation 1913
I'm trying to install the client on a server. In the event logs i get the following error (Configuration Manager Client -- Error 1913. Could not update the ini file SMSCFG.INI. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.) In the ccmsetup log I see the following error. Configuration Manager Client -- Error 1913. Could not update the ini file SMSCFG.INI. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it. Installation failed with error code 1603. I do not see the smscfg.ini file in the windows directory. I've tried uninstalling then reinstalling the clients as well as creating a dummy smscfg.ini file.

Any chance that ccmsetup.exe is not allowed to write to %windir% at all? Any server hardening in place?

I don't think so, I've tried the installation manually as well as throught the client installation wizard.

Do you log on as admin on the server? It must be a permission problem of some sort. Claus

Hi, On the client computer check that Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Installer/Always Install with Elevated Privileges policy setting is not disabled (same thing for User Configuration)

Can you tell me what is the OS version of the target server and what is the service pack level of your ConfigMgr ? Is it your first ConfigMgr client installation on the target server ? There is no other computers that are already ConfigMgr clients ?

The target server is 2003 SP2. SCCM is SP2. I believe this client had SP1 on it and we are upgrading it to SP2. I'm taking this over from another technician so i'm hazy on the details. We have existing SP2 config clients in the environment. Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

Also the error message reports a lack of privileges on the part of the user to perform an action relating to the ConfigMgr client installation ... What are the security permissions on the %windir% (right click/sharing and security/security) ???

I've played around with the permissions and it did not seem to help any. I just might reimage the server to be done with it. Any more help you can provide would be welcomed.

You can also uninstall the SP1 client (ccmsetup /uninstall) on the target server then install the SP2 client

Hi, Did you install SCCM or SMS client on this server before? If you did, follow these steps: 1. Delete the file “SMSCFG.INI” on this machine from “C:\Windows” 2. Reboot the machine 3. Install the agent again to see if the issue can be solved. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
