Clean install of SharePoint 2013 SP1 on Server 2012 R2?
Has media been released that supports the installing of SharePoint 2013 SP1 on Server 2012 R2 yet? It's listed as a supported OS, but with guidance of installing it. Is the solution to install 2013 RTM from media and then update to SP1, or do we have to wait for slipstreamed media (is that out yet?).

No, the new ISOs have not been released that support Server 2012 R2.

Hi,

SharePoint Server 2013 with Service Pack 1 and SharePoint Foundation 2013 with Service Pack 1 will offer support for Windows Server 2012 R2.

Currently, Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 is not supported for installation on computers running the Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system.  Installing SharePoint Server 2013 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2012 R2 could lead to unexpected behavior, therefore, Microsoft does not support SharePoint Server 2013 in Windows Server 2012 R2.

Thanks for your understanding and support.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi

Yes SP1 is out BUT......

You can install SP1 on Windows Server 2012, but you cannot as yet install SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint 2013 SP1 on Windows 2012 R2 as you require the slipstream version.

After installing SharePoint 2013 SP1 on Windows Server 2012, you can then install Windows 2012 R2 over Windows Server 2012.

Today i have installed SharePoint 2013 on an Windows Server 2012 R2. The "problem" is the prerequisites installer is not compatible with Windows Server 2012. You can install SharePoint 2013 with the following steps:

1. Login to your R2 server as Administrator. You can as well perform this step under the Farm Administrator account, which should be also local administrator on the server. Start Power Shell as Administrator and execute following statements:

1 2 3 4 5 Import-Module ServerManager Add-WindowsFeature NET-WCF-HTTP-Activation45,NET-WCF-TCP-Activation45,NET-WCF-Pipe-Activation45 -Source D:\Sources\sxs Add-WindowsFeature Net-Framework-Features,Web-Server,Web-WebServer,Web-Common-Http,Web-Static-Content,Web-Default-Doc,Web-Dir-Browsing,Web-Http-Errors,Web-App-Dev,Web-Asp-Net,Web-Net-Ext,Web-ISAPI-Ext,Web-ISAPI-Filter,Web-Health,Web-Http-Logging,Web-Log-Libraries,Web-Request-Monitor,Web-Http-Tracing,Web-Security,Web-Basic-Auth,Web-Windows-Auth,Web-Filtering,Web-Digest-Auth,Web-Performance,Web-Stat-Compression,Web-Dyn-Compression,Web-Mgmt-Tools,Web-Mgmt-Console,Web-Mgmt-Compat,Web-Metabase,Application-Server,AS-Web-Support,AS-TCP-Port-Sharing,AS-WAS-Support, AS-HTTP-Activation,AS-TCP-Activation,AS-Named-Pipes,AS-Net-Framework,WAS,WAS-Process-Model,WAS-NET-Environment,WAS-Config-APIs,Web-Lgcy-Scripting,Windows-Identity-Foundation,Server-Media-Foundation,Xps-Viewer -Source D:\Sources\sxs

<var>Note: D:\ is your Windows installation media.</var>

2. Download all prerequisites from the Internet and save it on local disk of the server, e.g. C:\SP2013Prereq:

SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Native Client
Microsoft WCF Data Services 5.0
Microsoft Information Protection and Control Client (MSIPC)
Microsoft Sync Framework Runtime v1.0 SP1 (x64)
Windows Identity Extensions
Windows Identity Foundation (KB974405)
Windows Server AppFabric
CU 1 for AppFabric 1.1 (KB2671763)

3. Install all prerequisites directly from the prerequisites folder in the download sequence, EXCEPT the last two (AppFabric and CU 1 for AppFabric).

4. AppFabric requires special configuration, therefore installing it usual way is not be enough for SharePoint. Install it using following statement from command line:

1 WindowsServerAppFabricSetup_x64.exe /i CacheClient","CachingService","CacheAdmin /gac

Note: The syntax with quotas is correct, it separates commas, not the components.

5. Install AppFabric1.1-RTM-KB2671763-x64-ENU

6. Restart your server

I came across this latest (posted 27-Feb-2014) MSDN Blog Post which has details on setting up SharePoint 2013 SP1 on Windows Server 2012 R2.

He is not running the pre-requisite installer, instead installing them manually.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sambetts/archive/2014/02/27/setting-up-an-awesome-sharepoint-2013-dev-box-on-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx

Let me try his steps and see if I can succeed.

Keep in mind, neither of these are supported installation scenarios at the present time.

Hi Trevor

I thought installing SP2013 SP1and the installing Server 2012 R2 over Server 2012 was supported.

Nigel

SharePoint 2013 with SP1 is a supported installation scenario. Installing SP1 on top of SharePoint 2013, or slipstreaming it, is not as it does not have the necessary binaries for support.

Sorry Trevor I am confused by your reply.

I thought Installing SharePoint 2013 on Windows Server 2012 and then installing Sp2013 SP1 was supported.  Why else bring out SP1.  I understand that slipstreaming is not supported.

Nigel

SharePoint 2013 *with* SP1 is the supported installation scenario on Server 2012 R2. SharePoint 2013 RTM and upgrade to SP1, or self-slipstreaming SP1 is not supported for an installation Server 2012 R2.

You need a new ISO from Microsoft that contains SharePoint 2013 with SP1.

I just successfully installed SP2013 SP1 on Windows Server 2012 R2 successfully. (Now running the White Wizard :) )

As Trevor mentioned, this may not be the officially supported way.  We need to wait for the ISO which comes inbuilt with SP1.

To setup the Development Environment the MSDN Blog that I shared above, can be used.

Hi Trevor

Thanks for clearing that up.  It was not clear from any documentation I have seen.

Thanks

Nigel

The ISO has been released on MSDN. If you have an MSDN account you should be able to get SharePoint 2013 with SP1.

SharePoint 2013 with SP1 integrated has been released today: http://blogs.technet.com/b/stefan_gossner/archive/2014/02/28/sharepoint-2013-with-sp1-quot-slipstream-quot-is-now-available-for-download.aspx

the command line to install WindowsServerAppFabricSetup is really helpful here.

I don't need to download prerequisites. I found them in prerequisiteinstallerfiles folder.

And since I tried WindowsServerAppFabricSetup without success before I came to this thread, I have to remove and reinstall, I get the MSI error 1603 and fixed by modifying PSModulePath environment variable.

The question is, "Why doesn't Microsoft include SP1 in the evaluation version of SharePoint Server 2013?" This version has been available to MSDN subscribers for almost a year now.

I have tried to install SP2013 from my disk labeled SW_DVD5_SharePoint_Server_2013w_SP1_64Bit_English_MLF_X19-36118 (1) onto a windows 2012 r2 which is now supported. (Check http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2891274 and text that reads . However, with the release of SharePoint Server 2013 SP1, this configuration is supported in Windows Server 2012 R2? )

I have the right disk I think

The output of the Prep tool is here:

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5: equivalent products already installed (no action taken)
Windows Management Framework 3.0: equivalent products already installed (no action taken)
Application Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role: configured successfully
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Native Client: equivalent products already installed (no action taken)
Windows Identity Foundation (KB974405): was already installed (no action taken)
Microsoft Sync Framework Runtime v1.0 SP1 (x64): was already installed (no action taken)
Windows Server AppFabric: was already installed (no action taken)
Microsoft Identity Extensions: equivalent products already installed (no action taken)
Microsoft Information Protection and Control Client: equivalent products already installed (no action taken)
Microsoft WCF Data Services 5.0: equivalent products already installed (no action taken)
Microsoft WCF Data Services 5.6: was already installed (no action taken)
Cumulative Update Package 1 for Microsoft AppFabric 1.1 for Windows Server (KB2671763): was already installed (no action taken)

but after countless reboots I still get:

Setup is unable to proceed due to the following error(s):

A system restart from a previous installation or update is pending. Restart your computer and run setup to continue.

What am I doing wrong?

This is what finally worked.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/14620c85-3c43-4c24-8471-fa30c34c85c2/constant-server-restart-pending- whenever-i-try-to-install-sharepoint-server-2010-beta?forum=sharepointadminprevious

1. Open Regedit.

2. Find the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager".

3. Rename the "PendingFileRenameOperations" value to "PendingFileRenameOperations2".

Once I renamed it, the install could continue.

There might be an easier way, e.g. for SharePoint 2013 180-day Eval users:

-Download Sharepoint2013 Foundation with SP1 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42039

-extract the exe via e.g. 7zip to any folder

-use the prerequisiteinstaller in the Folder, as it will work with 2012 R2

-reboot

-install SharePoint eval, which is still without SP1

-install SP1 after that

-run Windows Update

->seems to work, at least for install at the moment
