Clarification on SCCM SP2 client upgrade
This is a new question based upon an older post that I didn't want to slip through the cracks since it was already "answered".http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrgeneral/thread/f11b29c6-b5c2-4a19-91c6-fe93c248ee8fAccording to the above post, if Client Push Installation is enabled and the Clear Install Flag maintenance task is also enabled, then this will result in an "instantaneous" upgrade of all clients. For those of us that need to maintain version control on systems, this would be a very bad thing to have the entire environment suddenly upgrade. A few of us would be most greatful if someone can confirm or deny the above statement so that we can plan our upgrade appropriately.Nick Moseley - SCCM Admin http://t3chn1ck.wordpress.com

According to this you are right. Right? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb694040.aspx Also i believe if you have the SUP updated to 4.00.6487.2000 *which is the newest version with SP2 i believe* and you have client push installed it will automaticlay update to the new published version. is that correct? so do not publish the client on the SUP and use software distribution *http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632690.aspx* to target specfic computers that you want to upgrade.. idk but if you do the clear install flag method, according to the tech net article from what i understand is it will instantaniously push out newest upgrade right away.

According to this you are right. Right?http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb694040.aspx I feel the technet article is ambiguous. It doesn't clearly state anything about an upgrade scenario that if the option is enabled, it will result in an automatic upgrade:-(Nick Moseley - SCCM Admin http://t3chn1ck.wordpress.com

Automatic client push can not be used to upgrade clients after a SP. You must do this with manual client push or a software distribution. The clear install flag just changes client=yes to client=no in the database if the client hasn't sent up hearbeat in xx number of days. It has nothing to do with the actual clients.John Marcum | http://www.TrueSec.com/en/Training.htm | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum

sorry if this is a off topic question but. Q. is there a 64bit client version of SCCM? Q. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee344318.aspx is that the only documentation of SCCM SP2? Also: I ran a report just to see if anything client had been upgraded and indeed there were clients upgraded that i did not do a client push to. so i went to the computers and they did have them installed just to crosscheck my report.. so...?

I don't know how they got upgraded but I can tell you it wasn't from automatic client push. Were you targeting a collection with the upgrade package from a previous upgrade? John Marcum | http://www.TrueSec.com/en/Training.htm | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum

The client is only 32bit - but there are some components (XML, BITS, etc)that can be either 32/64bit depending upon the architecture. CCMSetup determines this and will install the appropriate components.2. You can find more information within the help file for the service pack. Thanks for the heads up on the automatic client upgrade, I'll keep an eye on that in my lab.Nick Moseley - SCCM Admin http://t3chn1ck.wordpress.com

Also, I am surprised that in SP2 that they did not make a " All Windows 7 Systems" Collection. I am sorry if these are newbie questions, as i am new to SMS world. Thanks,

Our SP1 environment currently has automatic client push enabled for all discoverd computers. So according to this answer, when I upgrade the central and other site servers to SP2, the client push method will remain enabled but only attempt to push to discovered computers with the 'client' field in the collection marked as 'No'? I want to make triple sure of this as we are upgrading this weekend and I am debating on turning auto client push off beforehand as I really dont want all the clients to upgrade spontaneaously through the auto push.

Does anyone have the upgrade process documented? I have searched for some time to find out how to do this upgrade and it is not clear. I am not using Software Distribution to push CCMSetup.exe and using the commands ccmsetup.exe /mp:<servername> /SMSSITECODE=ABC /SMSSLP=<servername>. When it runs, I am seeing "Invalid Argument:" for SMSSITECODE & SMSSLP switches. These switches work perfectly for new installations, but not upgrades.. It's so confusing."Give me an army of West Point graduates, I'll win a battle. Give me a handful of Texas Aggies and I'll win a war!" --Gen. George S. Patton, Jr.

Still testing this, but I just realized that there are no / in front of the MSI modifiers. Will keep you up to speed. I am currently running just the CCMSETUP.EXE and since it was previously installed, it will use it's own site code and SLP settings to determine the download server. But then I got a could not copy error.. "Give me an army of West Point graduates, I'll win a battle. Give me a handful of Texas Aggies and I'll win a war!" --Gen. George S. Patton, Jr.
