Choice column not updating

Hi All,

I am facing issue when changing the column type from single choice to multiple. The column value is not updating. Below are the steps to reproduce.

1. Create a out of box document library
2. Create a choice column (Type-Dropdown). Add few choices to it.
3. Save the library as template
4. Create a library by using this template
5. Add few documents (docs, pptx, doc, pdf). Keep the choice column value as blank.
6. Modify the choice column to allow multiple value (Checkboxes)
7. Try to update the document properties for the uploaded documents.

The document properties is not updating for office 2007 documents(docx, pptx). It is updating for pdf, jpeg, doc, ppt

Can someone please help me out to resolve the issue. The issue is happening in SP2010 and Sp2013.

Hello akash karda,

This is a known issue, it can also be reproduced in my environment

Here are couple workaround solutions you can consider:

1. Instead modifying the choice column (step 6), I suggest you add a new Choice column which allows multiple columns and use it to replace the original Choice column;

2. It also works if you fill Choice column in Step 5 before modifying the column.

3. Last option is to edit documents in Office Desktop Application, click Info=>Check for Issues=>Remove Custom XML Data, then it will enable users update the Choice column.

1. We cant create another column as we will require to delete the existing column and the client dont want to lose the version history for that field.

2. True, if it has value. it works fine but if it is blank. it does not take any value.

3. I will try the option 3. but in that case user have to always go to the office client.

If it is a known issue, Microsoft did not work on it to resolve the issue?

Hello Akash Karda,

In step 1, why do you need to delete existing column?

In my environment I copied existing values to the new column with a console application.

I was able to update values to the new column.
