Chart Series not working in report builder 1.0
Hi, I am creating chart reports in report builder 1.0. What I found out is, Report Builder does not take into account field(s) dropped in 'drag and drop series fields' while plotting chart. It only displays only one bar or line for given category field(s). Ideally, it should plot number of bars or lines equal to number of distinct values for a field dropped in ''drag and drop series fields'. Is it aleardy known issue or am I missing something? I have charts developed in BIDS(even as report model as datasource) and they are working as expected Thanks

Hi kp001, According to your description, there was only one bar or line displayed even the field in ''drag and drop series fields” have multiple values, right? Please correct me if my understanding is wrong. Actually, you are right, the chart should show number of bars or lines equal to the number of values from the field which is dropped in ''drag and drop series fields” in report builder 1.0. I am not sure why you only got one line or bar when designing chart in report builder 1.0. Could you please make sure the field which put in ''drag and drop series fields” have multiple values for given category actually? For more information about the topic, you can see the following article, Working with Charts (Report Builder 1.0): http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337281(v=sql.100).aspx If you have any question, please feel free to ask. Hi Eileen, Thanks for your reply. Your understanding is right. I did make it sure there are multiple values for the field in "drag and drop series fields" for given category. One unusual thing I noticed is, according to this article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337281(v=sql.100).aspx, "If you do use a Series group, the name of the group is placed in the legend of the chart. Series groups are dynamic." I do agree with this statement, and that is what happens when I create reports in BIDS. But In RB, It does not place the Series group in the legend, It places Value group (drag and drop value fields) in the legend in both design and run mode. Thanks again, KP001

Hi KP001, I am sorry for not make my post clear. I have tried on my test environment with RB and BIDS, and they have the same function in “drag and drop series fields”. The values displayed in the legend according to different values in the field which have put in the “drag and drop series fields” pane. In another way, we can understand that the Series group is equal Values group, and the Series group is used to add an additional dimension to the data in your report. Hope I make myself clear. Hi Eileen, Thanks for your ongoing support. I am wondering why its behaving differently for me and you. Just want to make sure are you using RB 1.0? If yes, am I having a bad installation(though everything is working perfect except chart series fields). Just for more clarity, I am sure there is no problem with report model because when I create same report in BIDS using the same report model as datasource, its working fine, series fields are working as expected. Thanks, kp101

Hi kp001, I am sorry for misunderstanding. I am not testing with report modle in report builder 1.0, I think you are right, the report modle in RB 1.0 has the differences from BIDS when deisgn report using report modle based on your test. Thank you for sharing your solutions and experience here,it will be very beneficial for other community members who have similar questions. Thanks, Eileen

Hi kp001, Did you ever work this out? I'm having the same problem where Report Builder 1.0 doesn't show the series field. I would appreciate any feedback on any solution or workaround. Thanks.

Hi All I'm having same issue. I'm running report builder 1.0 against a report model in SQL 2008 R2. I've create 1 report using a table and the information looks fine, I try to create a stacked bar chart with a series value and when I view the report it shows no breakdown of the bars by my series. If I move the series attribute across to the category axis and run the report the data is fine only I'd prefer to display using a series to show a breakdown of each category. Is this a bug with running report builder 1.0 on SQL 2008? I've never had this problem on SQL2005. Andrew
