Change of MOSS 2007 url
Hi, I have one site collection for our internal M0SS 2007 site. We will be using MOSS as our internal intranet only (i.e., no extranet). Can I change the url of my site collection location from http://serverName:75383to http://sharepointI used the Create Web Application interface to create the IIS sites. Do I need to do something in IIS or DNS? I am a beginner, so this is a learning experience for me. We have nothing critical on our site yet, so if I need to delete the site collection...let me know.

Hi, First, you have to define your new Url in DNS and IIS with the right IP address that points to your web application. Then, you'll need to create an Alternate Access Mapping (AAM) in SharePoint Central admin. For more details on AAM please read this articles : - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261814.aspx - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288173.aspx - http://spbyexamples.blogspot.com/2009/08/sharepoint-alternate-access-mappings.html BTW, you do not have to delete any content. Hope this helps. Regards, Djamel Chagour http://spbyexamples.blogspot.com/ http://mosslogviewer.codeplex.com/

Many Thanks for your quick reply Djamel. I happen to have Virtual PC on my laptop, with Server 2008, DNS and IIS that I use for training. For the DNS and IIS changes, would I make the changes below? Again I am new to this, so I'm researching it as I go along. In DNS, under the forward lookup zone, I have a domain by the name of ktest.msft. Would I create a CNAME record for the server (serverName) , with these settings:Alias name: sharepointFQDN: ktest.msftFQDN for Host: serverName.ktest.msftThan in IIS Manager, would I:right click on the main portal MOSS websiteedit bindingschoose add (not edit?)choose http, choose the ip address of the server (serverName), input the port was automatically assigned 75383hostname: serverName.ktest.msftI'm going to read your AAM links. I'm glad to here I don't have to delete my site collection. If I can get this right, hopefully I'll be able to access everything ok. Thanks again.

It appears I don't know what I'm doing. I'm not familar with IIS. I was advised by someone else to:Back up site collection in Central AdminDelete Web Application in Central Admin Delete IIS Website for the top level site collection in IIS Mananger (leave the Central Admin, SSP, and My Sites as?)Delete the Application Pool for the top level site collection in IIS Mananger Acquire an IP Address for the top level url In IIS Manager (not in Sharepoint's Central Admin) create a website named Sharepoint and an Application Pool named SharepointIn Central Admin - create a Web Application. Point it to the IIS website I named Sharepoint and to the Application Pool named Sharepoint. In Central Admin - Create site collection at the root (/ ).Restore top level site collection though STSADM.I think the only solution is for me to take some training. unfortunately I can't afford it. Our installation is for a small lab - less than 100. We have two servers, one I installed MOSS 2007 and all it's services, the other server, SQL server 2008 for the database. I set up all the accounts in AD and SQL database permissions on the other server and they are working fine, they are creating content databases. The search is working fine as well The url is the only problem. Everyone despises it.I think I just need a vacation.
