Categorizing Existing Sites with Site Columns
I have a question that I found difficult to summarize in the title of the post.
I'm re-doing my information architecture and moving sites from several web apps into one web app. I'm taking the opportunity to offer some new functionality.
My new landing pages are site directories that organize the sites under them by category via some views of the Sites list.
The categories come from a site column I created for new sites. The column is "Type of Site" and the categories are Project Site, Team Site, etc.
All of that is working. When you create a new site you can chooose a "type" and after the site is created it show up in the site directory under the right category.
However I am also importing old sites into the new locations. I know I can add the site column "Type of Site" to the old sites, but can I then "fill out" the site column choice for that site? In other words, can I make the old site a "Team Site" so it will
appear under that category in my directory?
I hope that made sense. Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

Hi,
I am not quite sure about your scenario.
Based on my test, I created a column called “Type of Site” in list “Sites” of site directory. I make this column to be type of choice with Project Site,
Team Site, etc. After that, section “Type of Site” with several site categories appears under the Category tab of site directory.
I import a site into site directory as a sub site. Then I go to list “Sites”, click new to add a new item and I specify “Team Site” for “Type of Site”
column.
After these, when I go to Category tab of site directory, click “Team Site” under “Type of Site”, I can see my imported site listed there.
Let me know if I misunderstand you.

Hi Lily,
Thanks for your response! Let me see if I understand it...
>I import a site into site directory as a sub site<
First I'm not sure how this is done, unless I am reading too much into "into site directory". I will be using STSADM import to import a subsite out of one site collection into another. That ends up as a subsite under the right site collection in "Manage
content and structure", but I don't know how to get it into the Site Directory list?
>Then I go to list “Sites”, click new to add a new item and I specify “Team Site” for “Type of Site” column.<
I'm a little confused as to how this step fits in between the step before and after it. We're importing an existing site, are you creating a new one here? If so why?
>After these, when I go to Category tab of site directory, click “Team Site” under “Type of Site”, I can see my imported site listed there.<
This is the desired result, but I'm still a little confused as to how you got here. Sorry for being dense.
thanks,
Shae

OK, I think I get it. The Sites directory is just a list of links. I was under the impression that it was a way to create new sites and a place to store them, or something.
So as long as I add a site to that directory with the correct category, the Categories web part picks up the listing.
Seems to be working. Thanks for your response Lily. It got me most of the way there and I was able to learn what's going on with the Sites list.

Hi ShaeAdmin,
Glad to see it works.
Site directory is a kind of site template in SharePoint. Detailed description can be found here:
