Cannot save new Office document with spaces in filename to SharePoint library
Hi,
When trying to save a document to Sharepoint, via Word or Excel, when the filename contains spaces I get "Word did not save the document" and for Excel "Document not saved".

I need to elaborate. If I create a new Word or Excel document and try to save it to SharePoint as "test document.xlsx" Word and Excel automatically replace any spaces in the file name with "%20" (so it's being sent to SharePoint as
"test%20document.xlsx"). However, the percent sign is an illegal filename character so the save operation fails. So the real issue is how to get Word and Excel to stop replacing spaces with "%20" ?Phil Shisbey

When we open a Word or Excel document that has spaces in its name from a SharePoint library then click Save As and give it a new name (with spaces in the new name) the Save operation fails. Also, if we open a new document in Word or Excel then
try to save it to a SharePoint library it fails if there are spaces in the file name. This looks to be because Word and Excel replace spaces with "%20", but the percent sign is an illegal filename character in SharePoint.
Would love to know if anyone else experiencing this. Pretty sure we used to be able to do this.

Hi,
Thanks to share your post in this forum.
For the issue that you have encountered,
On Windows Server 2003 you can create new Office document via Document Library toolbar and save this document back to Library
directly from the Office.
However, in the SharePoint instance on Windows Server 2008 you will be asked to save the document to the hard drive. You won't see SharePoint Lists and typing the name of the server in the "Save" dialog box will generate the error "Path doesn’t hot found".
The issue of this is that WebDAV access and functionality to browser the site structure is incorporated to "Desktop Experience" feature
of Windows Server 2008. It's a new feature and not enabled by default. So, to have ability save document to SharePoint from Office you need to add “Desktop Experience" feature to Windows Server 2008 manually (unfortunately, server restart is required.

Hope this could help you!

The only problem with this reply is that the Original Poster doesn't say anything about Windows Server 2008.
In fact he clearly states that the Server being used for MOSS 2007 is Windows Server 2003.

That's right: Server: Windows Server 2003 + SP2. MOSS 2007 + SP2
I'm curious if anyone out there can try this and if successful, let me know what versions, security updates and patches are installed. Thanks much!

We used to be able to save Word and Excel documents to SharePoint libraries with spaces in the filenames, but as of about a month ago it no longer works.

Hi Phil,
I'm running the exact same versions of XP, W2003, and Office 2007 as you except I have MOSS 2007 + SP1 and not SP2. I don't have problems you report.
I would check the exact SharePoint version (see here for details on doing this:
http://nickgrattan.wordpress.com/2009/09/01/am-i-serviced-packed/)
Then use this version number to lookup the CU, SP and other updates it relates to:

You might be able to relate when you started getting the problem to the release dates shown.

Nick,
Thanks for the advice. Our MOSS version number is 12.0.0.6510. We put on the June 30 2009 hotfix several weeks ago (about right when this issue cropped up):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970946/
Just found out that it works on the one PC in our company with IE8. On that PC, Word and Excel do not replace spaces with "%20" in new file names being saved to SharePoint.

Phil,
Sounds more like a version issue with the WebDAV client running on your PCS (this is updated, I believe, with IE8).
This article describes the client and its various versions:
http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/webfolder-client-list.html#issue-connect-parent-coll-escaped.
I don't have knowledge around this area, so this is as much direction as I can give. I hope it helps a little,

This problem was resolved by ensuring the PC was up-to-date with the latest updates. It was caused by running webfldrs.msi with the last four check boxes checked. We ran webfldrs.msi to fix an issue in SharePoint whereupon documents only open
read only and users can't edit documents. webfldrs.msi can fix some sharepoint issues but it can cause them as well.Phil Shisbey
