Cannot open database "ReportServer$SQLEXPRESS" requested by the login. The login failed. (Event IDs: 12317,18456,& 107)
I have SQL'08r2x64 freshly installed on a WS'03r2x64sp2 box and WS is also a DC (sorry). Previously, there was a SQL'05sp3 installation on this box and it worked splendito. I used the SQL'05 for some minor devel and to host a Backup Exec 11D db/installation; it all was splendito. Then, i removed SQL'05&BE11D to prepare for an upgrade of this arrangement. Next, i installed said SQL'08 to be the foundation for a planned Backup Exec 12.5 install. To date, I can't get to a clean install of SQL'08 and thus have not progressed to installing BE12.5. I now have this painfully annoying situation (as i've been beating on it for 2 days) where a series of errors occur during boot: 1st: srmSvc; Event ID 12317; File Server Resource Manager failed to enumerate share paths or DFS paths. Mappings from local file paths to share and DFS paths may be incomplete or temporarily unavailable. FSRM will retry the operation at a later time. 2nd & 3rd (occurs twice): MsSQL$SQLExpress; Event ID 18456; Login failed for user 'BOWMAN\xDevSvc'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database. [CLIENT: <local machine>] 4th: Report Server Windows; Event ID 107; Report Server Windows Service (SQLEXPRESS) cannot connect to the report server database. I couldn't find anything to sink my teeth into for the 12317 error; i'm still working on that. In continuing, the following is posted within the SQL Server's Management logs: t/s Logon Login failed for `Bowman\xDevSvc’. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified db. [Client: <local machine>] t/s Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 38 Upon opening User Mappings while doing a SSMS properties on the Bowman\xDevSvc Login, I got the following error: One or more databases are inaccessible and will not be displayed in list I found the SQL Server Agent service to be set to disabled (and thought it may be related) so i set it to Automatic and Started it; this allowed me to browse User Mappings but the said series of boot errors still occur. I continued to pursue the state 38 issue, however, i didn't see anything else offensive (not to say i didn't overlook anything). Next, i looked to the Report Server log and found the following post within it (had other errant posts that followed but this is the only one i can make sense of (somewhat)): servicecontroller!DefaultDomain!a08!08/28/2010-17:24:02:: e ERROR: Error initializing configuration from the database: Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportServerDatabaseUnavailableException: The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open database "ReportServer$SQLEXPRESS" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'BOWMAN\xDevSvc'. I went to the Report Service Configuration Manager, however, everything therein worked and looked good (to me). As a test, i swapped the said Service Account for Network Service the quantity of errors were much worse; had a flurry of these errors (repetitious). Now, i'm back to using the xDevSQL Service Account. Regarding TechNet: -How to Configure a Service Account for Reporting Services (and) -How to Register a Service Principal Name ... i registered SPN for the Service Account: SetSPN -a http/DC1 Bowman\xDevSvc Registering ServicePrincipalNames for CN=xSyLent Development Servicer, OU=Users, OU=xSyLent, DC=Bowman, DC=local http/DC1 Updated object ... and rebooted; it didn't help. The mentioned 12317, 18456, & 107 boot errors still occur. They only occur during boot, however, i'm not currently exercising SQL. Now, i'm lost. Here are the User Rights & memberships of the xDevSvc Service Account: • Access this Computer from the Network • Act as part of the Operating System • Log On As A Service • Replace a Process Level Token • belong to local Administrators and Domain Users. Anybody got any clues for me (please)? Glenn of xSyLent

Hi GlennXS, Could you please help to verify if the database 'ReportServer$SQLEXPRESS' is existing the database server? If it is existing, please make sure the user 'BOWMAN\xDevSvc' is existing the login list of the database 'ReportServer$SQLEXPRESS' too. Thanks, Jin ChenJin Chen - MSFT

Hi Jin and thanks for the reply! Yes: the ReportServer$sqlExpress is a hosted db of the DC1\sqlExpress instance. Also, so does the accompanying ReportServer$sqlExpressTempDB. And, Bowman\xDevSvc is a listed login of this SQL instance. As i was trying to explain, i originally had a problem viewing User Mappings for this Login but have since resolved that. Thanks, GlennGlenn of xSyLent

For this remedy, see my other post entitled: 18456 ReportServer Service Acount failed to open Master db. The link to such follows: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sqlreportingservices/thread/5860dfd9-8202-4225-96a8-bb153ca46d74Glenn of xSyLent
