Hi kukdai,
This problem occurs when Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint is installed on the computer that is running Windows SharePoint Services
3.0 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. By default, the groups that Forefront Security for SharePoint allows to access the Forefront registry are groups that include the SharePoint application pool account. However, the SharePoint worker process may
impersonate a regular SharePoint user instead of impersonating the application pool account. To get more detailed information about this issue, you can refer to this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940880.
To solve this problem, install Forefront Security for SharePoint Service Pack 1(SP1). You can download this hotfix from here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936867.
Thanks & Regards,

Our sharepoint support people had a get-around that worked for me...
- Click in the
document on IE sharepoint site, and Edit Properties
- Change the
name of the file (like by adding new at the end), then
close the IE window pointing at the sharepoint site
- Re-open site in a new IE browser window
- Optional: Go back to the file that wouldnt open Repeat steps to change name back to its original name
- Re-open site in a new IE browser window
- Try opening the document again
- Excel document now
opens properly
I know, it seems really lame, but it worked ... and may be easier than getting somebody to load a patch on sharepoint
