Cannot open PowerPoint files from SharePoint library
Greg Appelt Using WSS 3.0 (not MOSS) and MS Office 2007. When I click on a .pptx file in any document library, all of my customers get an error of "The path or file name for http://<URL>.pptx is invalid. Please check that the path and file name are correct." However the original poster of the file does not get this error on their own posted files. During troubleshooting, I've found that if I first download the file or do check-out to local drafts folder eliminates the error for that particular file. From that testing it appears that if the file is stored locally, the file in the document library will open, but if there is not already a local copy, the error occurs. MS Word and Excel documents do not have this problem.

Hi, Can you try installing, 2007 Microsoft Office Servers Service Pack 1 (SP1) and check if it helps. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD59175C-AD6A-4027-8C2F-DB25322F791B&displaylang=en Thanks, Skancharla

@Greg - Is is happening only with certain PPTX files or does this behaviour occurs for all Powerpoint Files and all users? I am suspecting some security/permission issue. Give a try with different Browsers and check the behavior. Do you have WSS Service Pack 2 applied? - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=79BADA82-C13F-44C1-BDC1-D0447337051B&displaylang=en @Skancharla - Why not latest Service Pack 2? Skancharla, unfortunately we are not running MOSS. We are using just WSS 3.0. Therefore I cannot apply any MOSS service packs. GregGreg Appelt

I do have WSS 3.0 SP2 (12/14/2009) installed. I believe the problem is going to Powerpoint related. When using Word or Excel, I can do a File/Open and use http:/website and it will let me browse any published documents, including sharepoint sites. However, when I attempt this in Powerpoint I get the "Invalid path..." error.Greg Appelt

KSDN. As for permissions, the users can open word and excel files listed in the same document libraries as the PowerPoint files. I posted a 'blank' presentation with a name of "a.ppt" into a new library with a name of 'A' so that the URL was short and had no unusual characters. Still failed when a user tried to access. But they could open a word document in that same library. Any PowerPoint gurus out there? GregGreg Appelt

This is really a wierd behavior. You seem to be clicking the PPT file link directly. What happens when you Right-Click on the PPT file link and try Save As operation? Lets understand your environment: - Poster - Other Users - Administrator Poster is able to both post and access the file. Other Users are unable to access the PPT files, but able to access DOC/XLS files. Whats the behavior with Administrator user? Some more questions: - Is this a New Enviornment you have recently setup? - Was it working before? Did this problem started recently? Do you recollect any changes made to Server software/config?Thanks & Regards, Kamlesh | Blog | Twitter | Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Poster - Can access all Word and Excel files. Can access all files that they publish/upload. Cannot open .ppt or .pptx files that were published/uploaded by other people. Other Users - Can access all Word and Excel files. Cannot access any ppt or pptx files published/uploaded by anyone other than themselves. Administrator (site owner) - Can access all Word and Excel files. Cannot access any ppt or pptx files published/uploaded by anyone other than themselves. If the user does a Save As or Check Out (which stores the file to the local Drafts folder), they are then able to open the file both as a local file, and then via the SharePoint hyperlink. This has been a working environment for approximately 8 months. Failures started after 'patch Tuesday'. All computers have XP, Office 2007 Pro, IE 7. There were no changes made to the server or via the Sharepoint Admin Console. What I find very unusual and what points me towards a PowerPoint problem, not a SharePoint issue, is the fact that if I open PowerPoint, click on the pearl and select Open, then type http://<SharePoint_sitename> in the File Name field and click Open, I get an error message of: "The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found." I also tested connecting to http://<non-Sharepoint_sitename> . PCs that are working with SharePoint, also work with non-SharePoint. PCs that cannot connect to SharePoint sites also fail with non-SharePoint sites. To me this points to a Powerpoint/http issue, not a SharePoint issue. Further testing. I, as site owner, had the problem on my PC but it went away after I rebooted. I then had a user that was failing try again after a full power-cycle of their PC. It again failed for them. I then logged into their PC. It also failed for me. Several other PCs that were failing earlier this week are now working. No further patches or updates have been applied.Greg Appelt

Glops, I have had no responses or real fixes. Shortly after posting this problem, it suddenly started happening to my laptop as well. After several reboots and attempts to clean out my user profile without any success, I decided to uninstall MS Office 2007 Plus Professional and then reinstall it. It worked! I'm now waiting for it to fail again. If I don't have any problems, I'm going to repeat the process on another failing machine. I will post my results in about a week.Greg Appelt
