Cannot map webdav sharepoint as network drive / location in Windows 7
Hi,I asked this question a few days ago, but my question is gone?! Please, if this is the wrong place to address this question or of some other reason it must be deleted, please tell me what to do first so I can progress with my problem.Anyway. I've tried to search these forums, google and bing searched all over the web, but for no solution that have worked for me yet.I cannot figure out how to map sharepoint as a network drive, so that I can access it and use it for storage in Windows Explorer. I can access and use it using Internet Explorer, but that is not what I want.I own a domain, have purchased sharepoint for that domain, and I used it successfully under Windows XP. After installing Windows 7 Ultimate RTM, I can't get it to work seemingly. I've tried to use the "map network drive" wizard, and manually through right clicking on "Network" in Windows Explorer. The result every time is that it doesn't spend a second on trying to contact my sharepoint address / site, and it says that "The folder you have entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another." The address is of the type: http://sharepoint.thenameofmydomain.comWhat I want to acheive is the same as I did in Windows XP, where my sharepoint site always where present under Windows Explorer, and where I could browse around in the different sub folder, create / delete / rename folders, and save, open and delete files - just as if it was a local folder on my computer.I would be very greatfull if someone could either guide me to a place where I can find a solution to this, if it is obvious what I do wrong, or can help me with this problem.Regards,O

The most common reason is that you are not running the WebClient service. Please verify this service is running on your Windows 7 client and try again.Randy - http://sharepointhawaii.com/randywilliams

Thank you very much for your response to my problem.I can verify that I have a service called "WebClient" with PID 1084 (if it matters), and that is running when I check in Task Manager. It is not called "WebClient service", only "WebClient", but I guess it is the same. How do I proceed? Steps is very good, as even WebClient is not something that I am familiar with and it was not obvious that I would find it neither under Task Manager - I was just something I did when searching through different places to find that process.Regards,OA

Are you using SSL? Mapping drives is not supported using https. I know you said it was working before in Windows XP, but just want to verify this. Have you tried the net use command-line command to see what happens? Here 's the basic syntax:net use t: http://server/web/doclibraryIn some cases, this might also work: net use t: \\server\web\doclibraryRandy - http://sharepointhawaii.com/randywilliams

Using SSL as in typing in "https://" instead of "http://"? If that is the question, then it is no. I type "http://...".The story behind my sharepoint is that I own a domain, I use Active 24, and purchased the "Business package" they provide (http://www.active24.co.uk/sw1799.asp), "Active 24 offers you your own professional online workspace and communications centre with 25MB SharePoint included with your hosting. SharePoint represents the ideal online platform to increase communication and collaboration within your business." - however I have a 1GB, but should make no difference.I tested with the basic syntaxes that you provided me with, both under "Map Network Drive" and under "Add Network Location". Same errors as before. What happens when I try "Map Network Drive" is that it asks for password if I check for "Connect using different credentials", but the error is the same for "Map Network Drive", which is Error Code: 0x80070043When I try "Add Network Location" and use the "\\sharepoint.mydomainname.com" it returns the error "Windows requires a share to publish to. Please try another location". If I just type in "http://sharepoint.mydomainname.com" then it retuns the error: "The folder you have entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another."Thanks for your help so far.Kind regards,OA

I went back to my old Win XP machine today, did the routine of setting up the sharepoint site, and all works perfect. Here is what I do (and which doesn't work under Win 7): Windows XP Tablet 2005, SP3: 1. Starts the computer 2. Open Windows Explorer 3. Right clicking "My Network Places" 4. Clicking the "Map Network Drive" on the list 5. Clicking "Sign up for online storage or connect to a network server". 6. Starting the wizard 7. Choosing "Choose another network location" 8. Typing in the internett address: "http://sharepoint.mydomainname.com" - nothing more! 9. Computer ask automatically for login credentials 10. Typing in the credentials, and ok 11. My sharepoint site is listed now under "My Network Places", and I can access all folder and have full rights! I do the same in Windows 7 Ultimate 64, however it never asks for my credentials. I just gives me the error message: "The folder you have entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another." I hope this helps to understand a little better my problem... Regards, OA

Here is more research - still ending in the same failure:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=17C36612-632E-4C04-9382-987622ED1D64&displaylang=enDid everything in that link, downloaded the update, but exactly the same problem. It would be a relief to hear if there are other than just me that is experiencing this problem - or if it is my computer specificly. Basically I want to add the sharepoint as network location, just as I did in Windows XP. Can others confirm if they have managed to do it under Windows 7 or not?Regards,O

I was using an https:// address to connect to my network folder on my college's server. In XP it works fine. Why is this not allowed in Windows 7?
November 9th, 2009 1:45am

My problem was with a http:// address. The http:// addresses as webdav is apparently blocked by defaultbecause the information and credentials is not encrypted and other users could abuse this, and due to increased demand for security such features is turned of in Vista and so onin Windows 7.I have not tried with https:// addresses yet, butgot the impression of that if my webdav was located at a https:// addressI would not have experienced my problem at all in the first place. If you provide a little more information about your OS configuration, what steps you are taking from you turn on your computer till you receive the error step by step, and perhaps most important - information aboutthe serveryou are trying to connect to. I am sure there are people out there that might already have encountered the same problem, found a fix and hopefully can help you. I am no expert at all, but I will have a look my self hopefully being able to help you too if possible. The experts and enthusiasts that are in these forums I am sure do hold skills to dismantle the OS if needed :DAre you having the same problem as these guys: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/97c16139-1851-4623-80e4-5fe37d7a984b?It seems also that Vista and Windows 7 have much the same problems, since you are comming from XP, so if you are able to specify your problem as a search and search for Vista as well, you might be lucky and find the solution there as well. At least worth a try while your looking for the solution.Regards,OA

I have exactly the same problem. My company has set up a Sharepoint. Of course there's no problem accessing the folders via a random browser, but I'd also like to map it. When I first enter the address with https://, the wizard takes ages to react (like 1 minute), ask me twice my domain password and then return the "The folder does not appear to be valid" message. Any further attempt will return the same message, without the waiting time. I tried the Regedit trick indicated by olalbu but it didn't solve the problem. The WebClient service is running. I'm running Windows 7 Professional (EN). Of course no problem with Windows XP. Thanks for any hint! Regards

You remembered to restart after you editted the registry? I forgot to do that the first time, and nothing changed. After I restarted after the registry edit, then it worked for me.Regards

Yep I rebooted but nothing has changed :( It seems that the fix is only for people using basic authentication. In my case, I'm using auth over SSL, so there shouldn't be any problem...

Problem solved. After looking at a Wireshark trace, I concluded that something was wrong with my certificates (it refused the SSL connection).I reinstalled them and everything went fine.

I tried using net use command to map drive from my server. If i type net use x: \\server\folder i can map drive without ssl. If i enable ssl with my site, mapping asks Enter the user name for 'Server' .

Many thanks olalbu! I was tearing my hair out trying to get this working on my 64bit Win7 machine. The (Vista) registry hack in KB84125 fixed it for me right away. Strange it's so hard to find KB84125 when googling this problem. Lots of mentions of KB907306 (no use for Win7) After finding your post I've now found this http://www.deploymentzone.com/2008/08/01/sharepoint-webdav-and-http-not-https/ which is the holy grail... Thanks again (I've still got some hair!)

This worked for me, when i was configuring SharePoint Document Library as a network drive in Windows 7. Just run the WebClient service. Please verify this service is running on your Windows 7 client and try again. Thanks Randy !
