Cannot maintain versioning on documents when moving to different folders within the same repository
When I copy/paste documents to another folder (in the same repository) the documents do not retain their versioning history in the new folder...they appear as "new" with no history. I have used "Explorer View" and a mapping under My Network Places and neither preserves the versioning. Please tell me there is a way to do this as we need to re-organize the files but it's critical we maintain the history. Thanks.

By repository you presumable mean Document Library. If so instead of using folders to re-organize the files; use Views. When you assign a file in a document library to a field you have just added to the doc lib called for instance Category1, you will not lose any versions of the document.fYou can create Views on the different values of category1; group on the field; filter on it etc.FAQ sites: (SP 2010) http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com; (v3) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com and (WSS 2.0) http://wssv2faq.mindsharp.com Complete Book Lists (incl. foreign language) on each site.

Yes, document library. We expose folders through our portal so the files have to be maintained in folder structures...cannot use views. Is there no way to move a file's version history with the file? Thanks for your assistance.

Use ManageContent and StructureSite Actions > Manage Content and Structure > Choose the Library > Choose the docs >Use the Actions drop Down Click onMove > Choose the new LocationNote: If the objects (docs) are checked out you will lose the changes that jhave been made since the last checkin-IvanIvan Sanders http://www.linkedin.com/in/iasanders http://dimension-si.com/blog

Hi ! I knew this option from MOSS2007. In Sharepoint Server 2010, however, I've found that the author of every version gets transformed into System Account. Is this a malfunction on my end, or is it a known limitation ? Thanks
