Cannot install first management point in new site
I'm new to SCCM, so please bear with me for any stupidity... Last week, I installed the site server for a new SCCM native mode deployment (2007 R3). The install of the site server itself and the components for the remote SQL cluster were successful, but the install of the MP role on a remote box failed. All of the servers involved are running 2008 R2. I've checked over the prereqs a dozen times, IIS/BITS/WebDav are installed and configured, and the SSL cert is applied to the https binding. When the install fails, I receive the following component status message on SMS_MP_FILE_DISPATCH_MANAGER: SMS Site Component Manager failed to install the performance counters for this component on this site system. Possible cause: The site system's registry is full. Solution: Increase the size of the site system's registry. Possible cause: SMS Site Component Manager does not have sufficient access rights to administer the site system. Solution: Verify that the Site System Connection accounts are properly configured to allow SMS to administer the site system. Possible cause: The site system is turned off, not connected to the network, or not functioning properly. Solution: Verify that the site system is turned on, connected to the network, and functioning properly. Possible cause: Network problems are preventing SMS Site Component Manager from connecting to the site system. Solution: Investigate and correct any problems on your network. More information may be available in SMS Site Component Manager's log file "sitecomp.log" and the perfsetup.log on the site system. The SMS and SMS_CCM folders show up on the hard drive and the install is attempted, so I'm assuming that network connectivity is not an issue. I've received the same result with and without the Windows Firewall being enabled. Looking at perfsetup.log on the MP, I see this: Error: Initilization file D:\SMS\SCRIPTS\00000409\perf\SMS_MP_FILE_DISPATCH_MANAGER.ini contents are not for component SMS_MP_FILE_DISPATCH_MANAGER. At this point, I've hit a brick wall. I've hunted around for hours trying to locate any small tidbit of information relating to this, but I keep coming up empty handed. For giggles, I tried the same thing on another 2008 R2 system and ran into the same problem. This leads me to believe that I'm doing something wrong and/or completely overlooking something. I hope that someone can grant me some insight into what is causing me to run afoul.

Does the primary site server have admin rights on the remote machine that you want to be a MP? Is there an MPSetup.log being created on the remote server? On a side note... Being new to SCCM you have jumped directly into about the most complex setup possible. Are you sure you need all of this? John Marcum | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum/|

I concur with John. Is there a reason you are using a separate/remote SQL installation? Is there a reason you are deploying in Native Mode? If so, do you have all of certs in place? Is there a reason you are seperating your MP from the primary site server? Definitely examine the MPSeyup.log that John mentioned for further details.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys

Yes, the primary site server's computer account is a local admin on the MP. The MPSetup.log on the MP shows that prereqs and the role were installed successfully, and confirms that WebDAV was configured correctly. I agree with your assessment, I think it's inane that we are setting up such a complex environment for a whole 500 endpoints. I tried to reason this out with my coworker, but he's the one that went to the training class and was told not to combine roles...

I decided to say screw it, and installed the MP on the site server. Unsurprisingly, it worked fine. I'll worry about it if we see performance issues.

I'm getting the same issue when trying to install the Reporting Services point now, so I'm going to have to put in a support call. There's clearly something strange going on.

Problem solved. My issue was corrupt performance counters. I find it odd that was the case on multiple servers, but I can't argue with the fact that it works now :) Repairing the performance counters by using lodctr.exe /r solved the problem. I have more now, but at least the MP is installed.
