Cannot install MOSS 2007 SP2 after successful install of WSS 3.0 SP2
I have a virtual machine (Virtual PC 2007) built using Windows Server 2003 and the MOSS 2007 "with SP1" (MS did the slipstreaming for me on one of my MSDN subscription DVD's, so don't blame me). I also have SQL Server 2005 SP3 installed plus all updates through July 2009. Other software includes PowerShell, Office 2007 Ultimate SP2, Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2008, all patched to be current. I can get WSS 3.0 SP2 to install and even get the Configuration Wizard to run afterwards. However, when I try to run c:\aaTemp\officeserver2007sp2-kb953334-x86-fullfile-en-us.exe, it starts to run, asks me to accept the agreement, puts up a box that reads "Extracting files, please wait..." and almost immediately (zero progress bars) pops an error message: The installation of this package failed. This error is repeatable at will. I have 36.6GB out of 64GB free disk space. I have downloaded the file three times, thinking maybe it's corrupt (and to see if the patch for the 180 day license issue is included), but I'm 100% convinced that the file is not corrupt. I even tried this version of the command without success (other than to capture the extracted files in c:\bbTemp): C:\aaTemp>"officeserver2007sp2-kb953334-x86-fullfile-en-us.exe" /extract:"c:\bbTemp" I've tried all the so-called remedies, including registry editing to disable loop back checking, runing the Component Services "fix up" to allow spexampe\spservice to various things, clearing %temp%, %windir%\temp, but at this point, none of these "remedies" do any good. I could understand if I was previously seeing errors in the Event Logs *BEFORE* attempting either the WSS 3.0 SP2 upgrade or the MOSS 2007 SP2 upgrade, but that isn't the situation. Unless somebody has a better idea, I'm going to take one of my "base" images and see if I can install WSS 3.0 *WITH SP2* (I already downloaded it) followed by MOSS 2007 With SP1 followed by MOSS 2007 SP2 to see if it works any better to do things in that order. What would really help is if there was a MOSS 2007 *WITH SP2* similar to WSS 3.0 *WITH SP2* available for download instead of making each of us go read http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261890.aspx and individually try to reinvent the same wheel. If you think development is tough now, try doing it on punched cards :-)

If you can't even extract the file, perhaps the file is currupt. Try downloading it again. This worked for me with the same problem... The installation failed is a pretty rubbish error when it means couldn't unzip the package
