Running Sharepoint 3.0 on Win2k3 box for some time now. Today is decides to quit on me. When you try to go to the site you get this error: "Cannot connect to the configuration database." FYI... I've read on a few other posts that KB934525 causes the problem. After reading the posts I checked with our network operations team and found out that the mentioned patch had been installed over the weekend as part of scheduled patching. I've yet to find the fix.

I had the same problem after installing KB934525. After doing some searching I found an important note that was not on the main page of the patch but in the description details an another page. You have to do one more step after you run the patchto complete the installation. I cut out the portion below. I hope this helps.... ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Post-installation information After you apply this hotfix package, you must run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard. To do this, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard.Important Because of a problem with the hotfix installation, you must not run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard to complete the installation if you are running a Windows SharePoint Services stand-alone installation that uses the Windows Internal Database Engine. Instead, you must use the Psconfig.exe command-line utility. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK. 2. Change to the following directory: system drive\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Bin 3. Run the following command: psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2bIf you ran the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard, you may experience a long delay, and the wizard may not be completed successfully. Alternatively, the configuration process may be unsuccessful, and you may receive the following error messages: Configuration Failed An exception of type System.Data.SQLClient.SQLException was thrown. Additional exception information access to module dbo.proc_MSS_GetConfigurationProperty is blocked because the signature is not valid. Additionally, the following event may be logged in the Application log: Event ID: 5586 Source: Windows SharePoint Services 3 Unknown SQL Exception 33002 occured. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below. Access to module dbo.proc_MSS_GetConfigurationProperty is blocked because the signature is not valid. If you experience these issues, use the Psconfig.exe command to manually complete the installation of the hotfix._____________________________________________________________________________________________

Superb, worked great. Found that the search service was disabled so it failed, but I had to run the command line again with -force on the end after setting the service to automatic. Thanks very much for your help. - Kurt

In our case the problem was that we had two network cards and both had a default gateway, we removed the default gateway from one of the network cards which was being used for back ups and then we didnt see any DB connectivity issues.

I upgraded my single box wss 3.0 using the internal dBto sp2 and ran in to problems connecting to the config database. None of the sites or the central admin site worked. Your tip ( to run psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b) solved this problem for me. Thanks.David.

Hi guys , you are lucky if the psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -force command has worked for you . this may work if the psconfig fails while upgrading . at times your config database may have got upgraded and the content hasnt . there is a pre upgrade tool that we need to run before the installation of sp2 . yes jonzie , you are partially right , we have run that command . yesterday i faced a issue wherein we ran the command and it failed . we removed all the content databases and then ran the command which succeeded then ran the stsadm adcontentdb command to attach the content databases now everything was working fine . reinstallation has to be done only in cases where we have disconnected the config from the farm and it starts creating a new config database without tables everytime you run the psconfig wizard . please add to it

I have read and followed every single thread in this forum dating from the initial post on 10-15-2007 to this most recent post above on 07-15-2010; and NONE of these fixes are working for me! I've run the proposed psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -force several times, but all fail. I've run the SharePoint Products & Technologies Configuration Wizard and it rips though 8 of the 10 configurations just fine, then chokes and dies at 9 of 10 (argh!) Also, when I try to connect to Server]Microsoft##SSEE MS SQL Server Management Studio Express, I get an error messsage stating: "Cannot Connect to Server\Microsoft##SSEE - A network-related or instance-related specific error occurred while establishing a connection to the SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessbile. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server / Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server) I'm at a complete loss as to what to do next. CompanyWeb will not load. However, ISS is running. RWW works. OWA works. CompanyWeb does not. Can anyone review my error logs and try to decipher what is doing on here? (btw, how do you attach / upload the log file here? - Don't see a means of doing that) Thanks!

Brian, I am having the same problem. Also ISS running, RWW Works, OWA works and Companyweb doesn't. I also have the log files. As well as you, I would like some expert help us to find out what is the exact error analizing our log files (After looking at several blogs, I can see that the upgrade process fails in diferent steps, so the fixes do not apply for all cases). Also, how can we get Microsoft involved? Regards Arturo
