Cannot check out office document when opened from a shortcut
Using MOSS 2007, Windows XP, Office 2007, IE6 I have shortcuts to a few word and excel documents that I update often. If I navigate to the document in SharePoint, and click the document name, it opens in Read-Only mode, but there is a "Edit Document" (or "Edit Workbook") button that I can click that will allow me to edit the document. Or I can go to the command button and select Server -> Check Out. However, if I open this same document from a shortcut (or right-click the document name and select "Open in new Window"), the document still opens in Read-Only mode, but the Edit Document button and Check Out command are gone. These shortcuts were working until we migrated the documents to a new sharepoint site a few weeks ago. The old site has been deleted, but as far as I know, the document library settings were the same as on the new site. I have admin permissions on the site and check out is not required on the library. I did try changing my shortcut to use "file" instead of "http" and that enabled the check out button, but the "Edit Document" button is still missing. Why would the behavior be different when opening from a shortcut vs. opening directly in sharepoint? What site/library settings could impact this behavior?
