Cannot assign an email address to a list as it is already in use (used in a site I deleted)
HelloI have deleted an older sharepoint site and set up a new one and would like to use the same email address I used before in the document list, however it is telling me it is already in use.The place that was using it was a document list on a site which I deleted so I cannot modify that anywhere and I would really like to use the same email address. The database for the deleted site was also removed so I cannot think where this might be being held.I have also deleted the AD user which sharepoint created when the other list was set up.When I try to set up the new document library I get this error:The list was created successfully, but could not be assigned an e-mail alias because of the following error: Unable to assign this e-mail address to the list, because the address is in use. Thanks for any helpRobinRobin Wilson

It's ok I resolved it myself. Not sure if is a bug but if you mention the email address in the description and then try to set it as the email address for the list it says it is already in use as it must search the description. So if you put "send emails to mylist@domain.com" and then try to set mylist@domain.com it will tell you the email address is already in use and will not set it, but if you modify the description first and remove the address from there then you can successfully set the address for the list.A workaround is to set the description after seting up the email setting for the list.I suppose it must be because it uses full text searching to see if an address is listed anywhere.Robin Wilson

I have this same issue, but I am not really understanding your explaination. Where is"send emails to mylist@domain.com"? and the description you are talking about comes from where?Rick Spicknall

Hello RickThe problem was actually just caused by a propogation delay. I had to wait for SharePoint to realise the email address had been deleted and then I was able to create another list using the same address. The send emails to ... was an axample of a possible line of text in the description which at the time I believed was causing the problem. It then turned out that had nothing to do with it.After mail-enabling SharePoint by configuring the incoming mail settings, if you go to create a new document list it says "Allow this document library to recieve e-mail?" and you can type in the address there (or specify it for an existing list). However, after deleting a list which uses a certain mail address and then if you try to reuse that email address again you will be told it is already in use although if you leave it an hour or two it should work without an error.RobinRobin Wilson

hello, if you have deleted the website and still you face the problem, simple solution is : 1. go to central admin and change the incoming setting from central admin-operation-incoming email setting, set NO the option 'Enable sites on this server to receive e-mail' 2. iisreset /noforce 3. Reset YES the option ........follow the step 1 4. now go to document library and assigning the same email address which you are using before and were getting problem. 5. ...................will definitely resolve the problem. let me know if you solve the problem through this given solution. HelloThanks for the reply. As this was from a long time ago I can't really remember what the problem was but I believe it was just a delay issue and by waiting for an hour and trying again it worked.Maybe your solution would have saved me waiting.RobinRobin Wilson

Hello. I configured a local domain NOM.DOM on a server named SRV001 and I installed WSS 3.0 on that domain controller. I installed Exchange Server 2010 on a server named SRV002, which is controlled by the server SRV001. The server SRV002 is available on the internet via an alias EMAIL.NOM.SOUSDOM.DC that point on its public IP. On SharePoint, I configured the outgoing and incoming e-mail with SMTP EMAIL.NOM.SOUSDOM.DC. I have enabled incoming mail in order to associate with SharePoint lists email addresses of the form xxx@NOM.SOUSDOM.DC, available on Exchange Server. The mailboxes of users work as well as distribution groups created on Exchange Server 2010. My problem is: when I specify an email address (user mailbox or distribution group) previously created on Exchange Server, as incoming e-mail associated with a list (images, documents, ...), the system displays the following message: Unable to associate this email address to the list because the address is in use. How to solve this problem? I have several times tried the command "iisreset / noforce" as administrator, without success. Mbutho
