Cannot access websites based on newly created web application
I created a new web applicationand called extranet on port 2005. The application creation works just fine. I then created publishing site collection as the root site for the extranet web application. However, I cannot access the site and i cannot ping it either. I am using windows server 2008 r2 and my knowledge is limited in that environment. I would also like to have more than one application on port 80. I thought this would be easy using host headers but i cannot access those new sites either. Any suggestions?

Hi,with Windows 2003 the only thing you needed to do was to create the DisableLoopbackCheck registry key, but with Windows 2008 server I also had to add the actual host header urls into another registry key. simply: with Windows 2003 you could get away with only one of the resolutions described in this kb article Method 1: (recommended): Create the Local Security Authority host names that can be referenced in an NTLM authentication request Method 2: Disable the authentication loopback check Best Regards, Ammar MCT

I did verify that i was using the correct web application. I also tried creating a new web app and site collection following the tutorials at technet. Still having the same problem. I will try method 1 above and see what happens.

Hi wighttrash, As you cannot access the site or ping it, the first idea in my mind is the firewalls settings, could you please temporarily disable the Windows firewalls and verify if your issue is resolved? If not, could you please check the Application logs and System logs in Event Viewer (eventvwr.exe) and let me known the detailed errors logged there for further research. Let me know the result if possible. Ok I disabled the firewall and still have the same problem. I have been going through the application logs and found some interesting stuff. Error 1 Report server windows service (officeservers) canot connect to the report server database This was right after a reboot Error 2 SQL Database 'SharePointFarm_Config' on SQL Server instance 'ComputerName\OfficeServers' ot found. Additional information from SQL Server is included below. Cannot open database "SharePointFarm_Config" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'Name\spservice'. spservice is the account i used to set everything up Could this be part of the problem?

Hi wighttrash, Yes, the error Cannot open database "SharePointFarm_Config" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'Name\spservice'. could be the cause of the issue. It seems that there is a password issue with the account. Please try to following KB934838 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934838) to change the service account with the same password and see if it helpful for your issue. If your issue still persists, please let me know more information for further investigation: 1. Have your applied the SP2 on your farm? you need have at least SP2 to support Windows Server 2008 R2. 2. What is the installation type of the SharePoint farm? Basic (standalone) or farm? I ask this question because I see SQL Server instance name 'ComputerName\OfficeServers' is the same with Basic installation. If this is farm installation, could you please let me know the farm topology? 3. Is this a brand new SharePoint installation? Does reinstall SharePoint is acceptable? Let me know the result if possible. Hey, Sorry I have been out of town. I applied sp2 when installed Sharepoint on the computer and as far as the standalone goes I did originally install the stand alone instance but then i uninstalled, upgraded my database to SQL Server 2005 and then re-installed using the same name. There is only one server in my farm because I am learning sharepoint for the certification and this project is for a small business in my home town. I could reinstall but not until this project is done. It is not critical to get this working because i already have an application to work with i just want to know how to fix it. I will try the password tutorial you sent when I get home tonight. Could this be a DNS issue? Brad Wight
