Cannot Install XP - Error at the Dynamic Update stage, no log appears to show a problem
Really annoying error that is preventing us from deploynig XP to any machines:
Whether we use SD/task sequence media or any other method, the PC boots fine, gets the policy fine, downloads files etc, but errors after starting to install XP (during the blue background installing screen, at the Dynamic Update stage). Error message:
"Windows Setup has entounted a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
You will need to rerun setup in order to install Windows. Choosing Dynamic Update during setup wil possibly remedy this error."
The C:\Windows\WINNT32.log shows that dynamic update is disabled.
All the SMS logs show no errors at this stage, even after you click close on the above error message which then creates the generic and useless Task Sequence error "0x80004005".
Has anyone else experienced this problem - how can i investigate it??

can you post your entire SMSTS.log file somewhere so i can view it (or email it to me),
are you sure you are looking in the right places for the log ?
have you changed any default steps in the deploy windows XP task sequence ?

Hi,
You may also post some lines of the error here or
upload the log to Windows Live SkyDrive
(http://www.skydrive.live.com/)
and share theirs URLs with us for further research.

Sabrina

ok i dont see the Setup Windows and Configmgr step listed at all in the logs you sent me, without those steps running we won't know whats happening,
so kick off another deployment test and press F8 during the Apply Operating System Step, this will allow you to effectively get the logs before that fateful reboot.
watch the progress and visually verify that Setup Windows and Configmgr step actually runs, once it does it will want to automatically reboot, at this point capture the SMSTS.log file(s) and email them to me
cheers

Your first line is exactly what i said in my initial post - at the stage where the "Windows Setup has encountered a problem....", there is nothing in the log to show what the problem is. It is when the error message is on screen that i press F8 and sent
you the log. The log was copied with the 15 minute reboot prompt on screen.
Please advise!

OK. Now I have a feeling that it was the SCCM package that was broken in some way and causing that weird error. I have created a new client package and referenced that in the task sequence and it now gets past that step and restart (with a TS
prompt which appears correct). So i think i have solved that.
However, after that restart I now get a STOP 7b error!! How annoying. This is a SATA laptop and the HDC its set in the BIOS to native mode. Also, we have suitable drivers setup and hosted on the server/DP. Any ideas?

with Windows XP you have lots of fun problems with SCCM, usually always HAL and Storage, have a look at this post
to to help with installing chipset drivers and
this one for HAL issues.
