Can you limit reading permissions to certain columns?
Hi,a question about permissions in sharepoint:I know that sites can be configured with sharepoint groups so that users have permissions like reading, contributing or playing admin, and that sharepoint can even manage permissions per list item using these group. But is it possible to limit the permissions (for reading) to certain columns? Is there a standard managable solution for this?

HELLO, I think you mean showing particular columns to users. You can do it by creating views on Lists and Libraries.

I doubt if he means that. He is asking about permissions.Moving to the Admin forum. As far as I know there is no out-of-the-box solution that offers column/field level permissions. (and I'm unaware of any that isn't OOB) (Aside: I don't know how this was marked as proposed - there was no record of who proposed it. Glitch?) Indeed, i know about the views - that does create the columns that i want to see, but i want to restrict users from viewing other data, which isn't possible with a view. i read something about audiences though... what is that exactly used for?

I've had this question asked of me as well and your best option is probably to use a custom workflow with the ability to copy the items with elevated permissions into two separate lists. The better way to think of this is what do I have at my disposal out of the box that does this already? The answer is two lists or libraries. The glue that keeps these joined is possibly some sort of custom code to keep the lists/libraries in synch (read the custom workflow solution)My 2 cents.
