Can we seprate a user permissions, from a group.

Hi All,

May be the subject line is not much clear, its little confusing. Let me explain it here.

We have a site in that there are 5 groups are there, each group is having permission level like (Contribute, Full control and etc).

So my query is if permission for a group called "Site_Members" is "Contribute", all the members within the group will be having contribute permissions only or we can grant different different permissions to a particular users, who are residing within the group.

Hope u can understand it now.

Thanks All

The Members of the Group would take the Permission of that group , if you need to assign them something different you will need to assign it accordingly.

SharePoint will begin by inspection of the highest level of Permission.

So if a individual is given "Contribute" permission to a site, list or item, and is part of the default Visitors group with permission "Read", the first permission takes precedence and the user is given "Contribute" permission.
If the user is given "Read" permission to site, list or item, but is part of the Members group, that user will have "Contribute" permission.

I trust you are familiar with the concept of permissions inheritance, and beaking that inheritance, from site, list and individual items.

So , if i will change the permissions of the Group "Site_Members" from Contributor to Full control, All the members within the group will be changed to Full control.?

Do we have any option where we can change the permission of few members from (Contributor to Full control) not the whole group.?

Thanks for your help .

That's right. Members within that Group will have Full Control.
In most scenarios, I'd recommend to add those few members to the probably existing Group "Owners".

In cases where I want to downgrade permissions to Read, I'd recommend to add those members to Group "Visitors", use the Icon "Check Permissions" to inspect if they were awarded higher permissions from other Groups, if so, go and remove them from those Groups.
