Can my Hyper-V host server use it's own guest VM configured as a Distribution Point?

I configured a new server chassis to be used as a Hyper-V host and a guest VM running Windows 8.1 as the Distribution Point.

The Hyper-V host server that has the SCCM client installed would use the guest VM DP as it's primary DP within its boundary.

Can this be done, or is this not recommended as a best practice?

Thanks

I've not heard anything about this not being a best practice.  A client will use the DPs that are within its boundaries.  the DP has its own prerequisites, and as long as it is a functioning DP and the client can communicate with the DP, all should be fine.

Best practices are for labs and generic non-real world scenarios.

ConfigMgr is an OS based management system that is completely ignorant of the hardware layer. Thus, to ConfigMgr, you simply have two separate and distinct OS instances. Thus, as long as they can communicate (as mentioned in the other reply from Michael), then tis scenario is technically no different from the systems being on separate physical hardware.

I could see you running into minor issues if the host reboots while other systems are downloading content from the DP, but these are more logistic issues that must be coordinated no different than any DP rebooting.
