Can No Longer Edit PDF from SharePoint
We are running SharePoint 2007 MOSS, and we had followed this KB to make SP a little more friendly to PDFs: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832809 We were also able to easily click on a PDF and select "Edit in Adobe Acrobat" and have it open right up, just like you can for office Docs. Now all the sudden when we click Edit on PDFs we get this message: "the document could not be opened for editing. a windows sharepoint services compatible application could not be found to edit the document" Kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place on this one. Thanks in advance.

The KB article you reference above only deals with SharePoint showing PDF icons for PDF files and being able (using an iFilter) to index PDF content. It does not deal with being able to have "Edit in Adobe" be an option on the edit drop down menu. If you ever had that, it was a custom thing. You also have to ensure that you have a PDF editor locally installed if you wish to edit files living on SharePoint.I trust that answers your question...ThanksChttp://www.cjvandyk.com/blog

According to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2008.07.insidesharepoint.aspx?pr=blog , the error message you posted (Also shown in Figure 3 in this article) can be seen for two common reasons: 1. You don’t have the OpenDocuments COM control which is shipped with recent version of MS Office available on the workstation; If you can open an Office document such as Excel file with the “Edit in Microsoft Office Excel”, the OpenDocument control is OK. 2. When using the OpenDocuments control, the document cannot be opened by the WebClient service through the WebDAV redirector. You can try open the SharePoint document library Explorer View to test the WebDAV connection. Note that as described in http://blogs.technet.com/manjesh/archive/2010/01/03/all-about-explorer-view-in-sharepoint.aspx , sometimes you may open Explorer View via the FPRPC protocol, which is useless for you. Please download the following white paper for some comprehensive information about the SharePoint Explorer View: http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C523AC7A-5724-48BE-B973-641E805588F4&displaylang=en ; http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2008.07.insidesharepoint.aspx?pr=blog#id0190029 also contains some valuable information on WebDAV.

Unfortunately that didnt seem to be the issue. We tried the edit PDF function on several different client computers, and sometimes it would work in certain scenarios, but not work for other client computers. We would be able to edit PDFs in some parts of our SharePoint environment, but not others. Then without warning or any known major changes the Edit PDF function stopped across all sites and client computers. So now we have no idea whats going on.

You need to modify the DOCICON.XML file under SharePointRoot\Template\XML and add the following line: <Mapping Key="pdf" Value="pdficon_small.gif" /> Also, download "pdficon_small.gif" from http://www.adobe.com/misc/linking.html and save it to SharePointRoot\Images. These steps worked for me.
