I have a nested documents folder with THOUSANDS of design docs, manuals, etc. I would like to import this into SharePoint 2010 and retain the current hierarchal structure. Is there an easy way to do this (obviously, I don't want to import the folders and documents one folder and one document at a time).
Also, I would like the documents to either be mapped back to the folders for offline use (much like we can if they are imported into TFS Version Control). Is this possible?
You can create a Document Library in your site
From All Documents menu, Choose Explorer View
you can copy your parent folder and past
if you opened your Document library
on the top, right of the document library's name, click the drop down arrow
you will see:
- All Documents
- Explorer View
- Modify this view
- Create View
- Configure view for this location
(Sorry, knew to SharePoint and a little disorientated right now).
EDITED:
I did find on option to "Open with Explorer" on the Shared Documents Library Tools/Library ribbon. However, when I click on it I get a popop stating that it is not supported in IE8 (WHAT!??? NOT supported in Microsoft's OWN BROWSER?). I tried using FireFox, but this option is grayed out in FireFox for some reason.
I am a little frustrated. This seems like a rather intutitive and common thing to do and don't understand why it seems so difficult.
While browsing the document library, click "Library" (available under "Library Tools"). "Open with Explorer" can be found in the "Connect & Export" section.

If this answers your question, please mark it down as answer! Thank you.
The thing that troubles me the most about this question, is that it had to be asked, answered incorrectly, researched, answered correctly and voted upon... and somehow, it has escaped MS that this is one of the first things that people will want to do. There are a gazillion idiotic interface elements that many will never use, but are boldly/obviously available at a glance. Meanwhile, the most commonly used and initial functions have to be located by asking around Internet. It was answered in 2009 and it is now 2015 and people are still searching for this answer.
"Import Content" <- One of the first and most obvious things to add to the interface.
