Can't view webparts from some .wsp installations
I am sure this is something rather easy, but I can't seem to figure this out. I am running a Windows 2008 server with WSS 3.0 installed. I am attempting to add some cool webparts to my site, however I am having a real problem trying to get them to display on the actual site. I have downloaded free webparts from: http://www.firearrowsoft.com/product_rss.php as well as http://smarttools.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Copy%20Paste&referringTitle=Home . I have manually installed them using the stsadm as well as using the installer. I see them deployed in the Central Admin, however, I can't add them (they are not listed) as web parts on the default sharepoint site. I have looked at how to install .wsp files from Technet as well as other sites, and I believe I am doing this correctly (these perticular ones even come with a installer from CodePlex). I also tried to go to Site settings, site features as I assumed I needed to activate it first, but it is not listed there. As another test, I downloaded another .wsp from http://spelements.com/download.php called sprssticker and tried installing it. This one worked and I see it in the webparts. I looked at the config file for the .wsp installer, and noticed these lines are added in this one that works:<add key="FeatureScope" value="Site"/> <add key="FeatureId" value="4eca1605-59f0-4182-8fae-1dd2c9af0ccd" />Is this something that is needed in the config files (the other two I downloaded did not have these two lines) or can this be done after the install? What am I missing to install these .wsp files so that I can see them in my webparts?Lyle Epstein Kortek Solutionshttp://blog.korteksolutions.com

Hi Lyle,After deploying a solution (WSP) unless the Solution is scoped at the Farm you have to activate the Feature either in Site Collection Features or Site Features. As an example Smart Tools is scoped at the Site so you need to activate it under Site Collection Features or stsadm -o activatefeature -name SmartTools.WhatsNew -url "http://YouWebApp" Cheers,-IvanIvan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.
