I have been through the steps outlined on the site and now I dont even get that error (Moderator: see comment to Move for what "that error" was) BUT my icons for word documents are still there and have double arrows on them and I cannot open them at all. It hasnt completely left my system. how do i get rid of the last bit.

When Word document in SharePoint document library is checked out, there would be a small green arrow on the right down corner of the Word icon. Or do you mean the new co-authoring feature in Word 2010 http://blogs.msdn.com/microsoft_office_word/archive/2009/09/09/co-authoring-in-word-2010.aspx ?
